Best reader for romance novels

Hi,

My wife likes to read romance novels so I would like to get her a reader. Relavant info -
- We live in Canada
- She will read mostly romance novels, may read some books related to her profession (Social Worker)
- She is tech impaired so ease of use is important

Any suggestions?

being in Canada I would think a kobo would be a good choice

Being in Canada, a Sony Reader is an excellent choice. Might want to wait until October to check out the forthcoming T1 model.

Thanks for the replies. After some more research it looks like the Kobo with Calibre might serve her best. Will look some more at the Sony as well.

I am in Canada and we have a Sony and a Kobo. Either would be a good choice. I think for those that do not know tech, at the moment kobo might be a bit easier. If you load some fonts she likes, she will be able to change fonts right on the reader with the stock firmware. Any books purchased from kobo can be loaded directly on the reader without attaching to a computer. I really am enjoying my sony though as well and in some ways find it easier to work with, but I generally convert my books to get the font I want and all has to be loaded by attaching to the computer although if she is comfortable with loading an ipod via itunes or that idea, she would be fine with either. I do think I find I prefer the sony interface and love how it feels in my hands. Perhaps with the new Sony coming out, it will have the updates like you see on the kobo. I'll be curious to see it when it comes out and at what price it will be as I am considering one of these for my dh.

Really, either would work, perhaps see if you can see both readers and see what feels best.

Your needs are fairly modest. Any of the mainstream readers would work absolutely fine for you, I'm sure.

There are a number of good ereaders available.

My suggestion would be to spend a bit of time checking out the books available in Canada and then match the reader to the books. i.e. If your wife borrows from the library check out their e-selection and formats, browse in the online stores that will let you purchase and see what you can find, and then find an ereader supported locally (i.e that you can find in a store and see what it is like before you buy) that will read those books. The local library here actually has ereaders you can try out.

Yes, there is software that can let you transfer formats but unless someone is committed to doing that on a regular basis (and dealing with the problems that come with format conversion) an ereader that will read the books you want to read is probably the best choice.

I would vote for kobo. I have found the sony store limited in title availability at times. Kobo has lots of coupons.

I have a nook color, but am hoping to get a kobo for christmas - I'll keep the nook at home for the most part and carry the kobo in my purse. (nook color is bigger and heavier)

While I can and do put my kobo books on my nook color, I do find I sometimes wish I didn't have to take the extra step of downloading the books to my computer then transferring them to the kobo. The nook color is excellent for reading in bed without bothering my husband since it is backlit.

I read a LOT of romances.

One thing to note. Sony just works. Kobo is still trying to get things fixed.

The Sony might work best with Calibre in terms of the collections. I use Calibre for my collections on my Sony and it really helps to sort out my library quite nicely.

However, Calibre will pretty much sync to the major e-readers, Kobo included. For your wife's needs, I think any e-reader will probably do. I would have your wife test out the readers in a store and see which one she likes.

I would advise you to wait a few weeks for the new Sony to come out, then you'll really be able to compare them all. The new Sony model seems like it will be a bit more friendly to those who are tech impaired. I think Kobo and Kindle already are. All three (Kobo, Kindle, upcoming Sony) can get books without being connected to a computer

I would not say that.

Sony is a nice reader but Kobo works out of the box. I don't think that talking on those terms it's fair for Kobo's users or Kobo devices. There are plenty of people here than can confirm what I'm saying.

My wife is a great Romance reader and does find Kobo to be a good source of them.

She loves her Touch, and seems to get no end of material from the KoboBooks web store.
