For me it was "Les Misérables" in the late '90s on a Palm PDA.

Something from Jack London that I downloaded from PG, I think it was Call of the Wild, but I might be mistaken on that aspect.

The first book I read on my Kindle was Stephen King's Under the Dome, in January 2010. I knew I wanted my first Kindle book to be by "The Master." Besides, the DTB weighs 10 pounds (feels like).

Hmmm. On my first dedicated ereader (a Sony PRS-505), I think the first book I read was Cruddy, by Lynda Barry:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29015.Cruddy The first ebook I ever read was probably Riding the Bullet by Stephen King, since it was available exclusively as an ebook, and I think that's what got me started with Peanut Press (AKA Palm Reader AKA eReader) way back when. I read that on a Palm III, sometime in early 2000, IIRC. |

My Palm M130 came preloaded with a couple books and I think I read Jeffrey Deaver's "The Empty Chair" first.

I remember trying to look up books for my (original) Palm Pilot, but the process was painful and I didn't want it badly enough to investigate it very far. My Compaq iPaq had Tom Sawyer pre-loaded onto it, and I read enough to realize that even though it was convenient, I didn't like reading on that screen and I didn't get past the first couple of chapters.
It could have been the book rather than the screen since I've read it several times as a kid and it's not a favorite of mine. However, trying to find a other books to read was an unsuccessful venture. (I was amazed when I joined the forums here at the number of people that DID read books on their PDAs. I was obviously not ready for the future. ![]() On my Sony PRS-505, I think my first book was Sleeping with Schubert: A Novel by Bonnie Marson. I remember staying up half the night trying to decide what to buy when I had so many choices! For the decade before that I had been buying my books at either the local bookstore or Target, both with much smaller selections. I ended up using Fiction Nation book reviews to finally select it. I read this one all the way to the end. ![]() |

Before I had the Kindle, which I got last August, I used to read Project Gutenberg books on my PC.
My first Kindle book was Evelina by Fanny Burney (free, and a rereading of a book that I last read several decades ago, possibly in the 1950s). The nest one I read, and I paid for it, was Heartstone by C.J.Sansom (one of the excellent Matthrew Shardlake series of whodunnits set in the time of Henry VIII). |

If you count any portable device (PDA, etc) it was so long ago (about 18 years!) that I honestly have no idea.
Heck, I still mix it up a little bit and for some books I can't remember whether I "read" them on paper, a screen, or on tape -- in my mind the experiences are so similar that I don't distinguish them. |

I loved reading on my Palm. The program I used had a feature where you could set a scroll speed and it'd just start playing, and you could sit and read without ever thinking about "turning the page", occasionally adjusting the speed based on the content (up/down arrows on the front) or pausing it if it was getting ahead of you. I miss that feature. While lower resolution, the original Palm screens were similar to eInk in that they were retro-reflective and didn't emit light. Overall a great experience! I've actually considered trying to find an old Palm as a second reader since they're smaller and can be carried in a pocket.

Kindle User's Guide, 3rd Ed. is it for me for now.
I just got my Kindle, my first e-reader ever, so I've just been going to town downloading and organizing into Collections. Being a member of MR is helping me a lot with all the tips and tricks. This place is pretty awesome. |

"The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side" by Agatha Christie. Not a bad book, but didn't like the ending that much.
