I just checked. I have 12.3 GB free out of the original 16GB (the system use about 2GB). Of course, I don't have many games - Sudoku, chess, checkers, crosswords, etc are one I have and use - so I'm not a good example of how much space a heavy gamer would use/need. I don't mean that to be judgmental, just evaluate your needs. Currently I have about 43 apps loaded. So, I understand there are those who are much heavier users or those who need to store graphic files that require more memory. Just remember your Kindle has about 2GB of storage and can store thousands of books before you have to begin archiving them. I hope you, or your sister, enjoy the iPad.

Of all of those uses, video would take up the most space-if you wanted to download and store videos from, say, Itunes . Lucklily, there are a host of streaming video apps available in the App Store.

IF you want to stream movies, theres an app for that (Netflix)
If you want to watch TV, there are apps for that (Hulu, HBO GO, ABC Player)
And if you want to watch PBS, there's even an app for that

You might also want to practice division of labor among your devices-audio with your Iphone, books with your Kindle, games and video for your Ipad. One reason that I am bumping up against my limit is that I use my Ipad for everything.

Probably won't store many videos, but we do subscribe to Netflix so yes I would stream movies on it.

When you say you use your ipad for everything, could you tell me what all you use it for? I'm trying to see if I would actually use it for more than surfing, email and streaming.

Hmmm, interesting twist to the storage situation.

Beta testers of iOS 5 are reporting that, contrary to the initial description of iTunes Match as merely a download-your-music service, it may be in fact a stream-your-music service as well. That may change the storage requirements for some people, if all your music (and possibly movies as well) were all being stored by Apple and accessible over the web.

edit: Or maybe not-others are reporting that it isn't really streaming, just playing while downloading.

If you always have access to wi-fi, sure. If you're limited to a 5GB monthly 3G cap or lower, probably not. Cloud storage is only as good as your internet connection. It's the same case even now. We don't need Apple's iCloud to get streaming media to iOS devices (although it would certainly make streaming easier to do for most folks). There are already existing services and apps that allow you to stream content to iOS devices.

Granted, I don't think I've ever seen anyone using their iPad to listen to music (unless it's on a dock or something). Most of them are just using their iPads for video, games and web browsing.

I think that will be the next battleground actually-access to enough bandwidth/monthly data to support all the future cloud stuff-not just Apple's, but Amazon's, Google's, and Microsoft's mobile plans.

I think Netflix is probably the worst offender and yes, I agree. Before mobile, though, I'd like to see caps removed from home internet. Right now, a lot of cable internet providers in the US are already capping bandwidth (usually in the 50~250GB range depending on your subscription tier). I'd like to see that go away particularly since you're already paying tiered rates for faster speed.

Sorry, it took me so long to get back to you on this, sadievan. I had been meaning to respond but I forgot.

What do I use my Ipad for:

AUDIO

I listen to it all all day at work . I am a big fan of podcasts (to which IIsubscribe through iTunes)and I also have some of my music on it.

EREADING

I use my Ipad for reading ebooks. One of the reasons I got it was precisely because I didn't want to have to choose between Kindle, Nook, and KObo or engage in legal/theological debates about removing DRM, etc,. With the iPad, I could buy and read from any store I wanted to, and take advantage of all the deals.
I commute by Metro to work, so I do a lot of my reading there. At work, the iPad becomes my audio player.
I also read a lot of magazine content with the iPad. If I want to read "free" magazine content, there's a app for that (Flipboard). I I want to book mark magazine articles on the Web and read them later, I use the Read it Later app. I also subscribe to Isaac ASimov SF through BN and as a print subscriber to the Atlantic magazine, I can use their Ipad app for free.
Finally if I want to read comics, there's Comixology.

MOVIES AND VIDEO

I use the iPad as a second TV, for watching struff in the bedroom. Through Netflix I can watch of a lot of BBC TV shows, for example. One app Ididn't mention above was TEDTalks, for when I want a little brain food.

GAMES

Before the iPad, I never really played video games. Now I play quite a few. The iPad seems to to be on its way to becoming the gaming platform of choice.

WEB STUFF
Email, web browsing, Facebook, Twitter, etc. I do just aboutall of that on my iPad now. Its just more convenient than doing it on my PC

PRODUCTIVITY

I use the iPad as a mobile extension of my PC. I do work on my PC, transfer the files to my ipad, and take them with me. Calendaring and notetaking is done on the IPad .
So there you have it. Now you have an Iphone and a KIndle, so you can do a lot of that stuff on those two devices. You'll have to decide whether its worth it to spring for another device.

Thanks for that informative post and the app suggestions. If I do end up getting an ipad I will check them out. I keep going back and for between the ipad and a 7 inch tablet. There are a lot of 7 inch tablets that are coming out. Maybe I need both.
