The older models had resistive screens which I understand are awful. The newer ones have capacitive screens. As well with Archos stay away from the home tablets because they are the cheaper versions- underpowered, cheaper screens etc.

I have an Archos 70 internet tablet (Gen 8 released in 2010) and have never had a problem with it (Android 2.3 and regular firmware updates to tweak things). I use it primarily for magazines, movies and tv and basic surfing and it does fine.

I'd be leery of the older tablets from Archos but then again would probably say the same about every other tablet manufacturer since screens and processing power have increased with each new model.

Well let me clarify, but I still think where at odds here.

. I don't mind tight integration. I think that would be a great feature. I just don't want to be locked down like the nook or iOS. I want it to be integrated like Google THEN it would be an excellent product.

I guess the best way to describe it is inconsistent and laggy. It's surprising, because you would think that a capacitive screen would work better. Trust me, there's a reason why it is so cheap. The build quality is very poor. I would recommend the Viewsonic Tablet over the Archos, even with the poor viewing angles (the Archos doesn't have a great screen either).

***I don't know about the Archos 70. My experience was with the 10.1 version.

My hubby's 4 inch Archos is not all that responsive. He blames on fat fingers but it might be the touch screen.

hmm i see.
i'll be sure to try any archos products I look at in person then.
i really hate when touch screens are unresponsive..

. I just bought my Kindle 3G yesterday. If something better or new arrives (and really worth the money) I will think about it. But I started to enjoy my Kindle 3G since yesterday!

Which one are you talking about, the 7" or 10"? I was looking at the 7" the other day. Seemed nice. Am kinda in the market for a tablet too.

I would be fine with the 7 inch. I am going to be using this for travel so smaller is not a bad thing. I just want the new stuff to come out and see if the price drops.

I keep going back and forth between the iPad and a smaller tablet. The smaller tablet for reading books and a little surfing. The iPad for more surfing, email, movies, etc. I looked at the Nook Color but think it's too restrictive as a tablet.

Maybe I need both the iPad and a smaller tablet.

I don't want an IPad. I can't do what I want on them and I don't want to buy into Apple's universe any further.

I just can't get myself to read on my tablet. It has a gorgeous color screen, but there's no comparison between it and my Sony. The Sony feels like a book and is comfortable to hold. I can get lost in the story when I read an epaper device. The tablet never lets me forget that it's a computer, is heavier, and just isn't as comfortable on the eyes.

Now that I have it, the tablet is doing a decent job as laptop replacement. My Asus with the keyboard attached looks and acts like a netbook. It doesn't have all of the Windows programs, but I can create, open, and edit Microsoft Office compatible documents, read PDFs, check e-mail, connect to Skype etc. with it and everything but Skype came on the tablet. It's nice not having to lug the laptop with me everywhere I go.

I will have a tablet and an e-reader. I want the tablet for the internet and watching movies while traveling. I want my e-reader for reading.

10" ... I had the 7" but I sold it. I bought a very nice Android cellphone instead and iPad 2!

But the 7" is really nice. I had that one in a month to month contract, no 2 year agreement. So I was able to cancel service anytime, which is what I did.
