Keep your head down Issy! Good luck!
Here's a new one: "The fact that the money freed her temporarily from all minor obligations obscured her sense of the greater one it represented, and having never before known what it was to command so large a sum, she lingered delectably over the amusement of spending it." "Moral complications existed for her only in the environment that had produced them; she did not mean to slight or ignore them, but they lost their reality when they changed their background." "She began to cut the pages of a novel, tranquilly studying her prey through downcast lashes while she organized a method of attack. Something in his attitude of conscious absorption told her that he was aware of her presence: no one had ever been quite so engrossed in an evening paper!" |

Hmmm .... no guesses yet?
OK: "She had no tolerance for scenes which were not of her own making." "I was just a screw or cog in the great machine I called life, and when I dropped out of it I found I was of no use anywhere else." "She was so evidently the victim of the civilization which had produced her, that the links of her bracelet seemed like manacles chaining her to her fate." |

Power and internet back up at home late this afternoon, and that means running water, too. Bliss. I love plumbing. We were lucky; I'm close to the coast and we missed the worst of it.
There don't seem to be any takers for this one, so I'll nab it with House of Mirth. But I'm madly catching up both online and around the house, so if anyone feels the urge before I get around to it, please lay a quote on us. |

You are correct with House of Mirth. If you ever get out of that tub of newly hot water, you can set the next clue.
[glad to see you escaped relatively OK] |

I apologize for my highhandedness; I needed to wait for the go-ahead on House of Mirth. I hope you'll chalk it up to electrical deprivation.
I'm lobbing this one: "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbled Jo, lying on the rug." |

Well that one's "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott.
Do I need to give a quote now? (Assuming I'm right! ![]() |

"I have a desire to hear of that same madrissah." Mahbub stuffed himself with great boluses of spiced mutton fried in fat with cabbage and golden-brown onions. "But tell me first, altogether and truthfully, the manner of thy escape. For, O Friend of all the World,"—he loosed his cracking belt,—"I do not think it is often that a Sahib and the son of a Sahib runs away from there."
Hopefully there are enough clues in this section of dialog to help people identify this popular book and its eponymous hero. |
