I was very impressed with the screen on the Galaxy S2 that I saw - I think that's a Super AMOLED screen. The colours seemed more vibrant than on my iPhone. I wonder, though, if it could be made at the 300dpi+ that the iPhone has?

I personally love the idea of the technology behind OLED. I'm just not convinced they've hit the quality/battery life/cost goals they envisioned yet. But I'm hopeful-and it is still a young technology compared to LCD.

Here is a good article comparing Retnia vs Super AMOLED vs Super AMOLED Plus Personally the 300dpi is just a marketing spin it is not true 300dpi Quote:
The battery life depends on so many things, but independently the OLED do perform better in independent tests. It sure doesn't help that they also only are produced for 4"+ size screen. Had Apple used these screens I'm sure you would see a battery increase on their iPhone. Yes the cost is still high. With Samsung being the only maker and the technology being so new you'll only ever see them on their high end phones until the price drops. =X= |

@=X= : who makes those Super AMOLED Plus screens though? If it is only Samsung I have a feeling that they (Apple) may not be keen to source more parts than they already are from Samsung considering their current litigation and rumour of moving CPU production to TSCM next year <- though this could also all be negotiation tactics, who knows.

@molman Yes Samsung is the only AMOLED supplier that I know of. Samsung is already supplying Apple screens for the iPhone an iPad. I think that might have changed after the law suit but it is unclear.
That said Samsung is not really a company to trust. Last year they where supplying AMOLED screens for HTC's Droid Incredible. Samung "couldn't meet demands" that cause a huge back order, however some how they where able to meet the demands of their hot selling "Galaxy S" line. |

Anyway I think an AMOLED screen in the iPhone 5 is unlikely. With regards to Samsung and HTC, if HTC had reasonable supply contracts in place it shouldn't have been a big issue as Samsung would have failed to meet quotas with associated penalties. I've also heard that the Samsung divisions operate quite separate, and even their manufacturing arm has to tender for work for the work of their other divisions. I'm personally not actually expecting too much with this next iPhone. The current one is still selling like hotcakes so I wouldn't be surprised if this is more akin to a 3GS iteration in scope. If I had to take a guess: Style change (no glass back, smaller bezel around screen (maybe even curved ala ipod nano 4/5G), less squarish), new camera (8MP?), slight bump here and there (few more Mhz on processor, or memory or something).. and the rest about iOS 5. I don't really see LTE, and I'm unsure that NFC is there yet so I'd be surprised if they include, but who knows. Edit: oh and they will have one model for all bands/carriers as they apparently could with the chip already inside the Verizon iPhone 4 Last edited by molman; 08-30-2011 at 12:42 AM. |

Yes I agree, Samsung seems to be holding the AMOLED technology for itself. Also I don't see Apple dealing too much with Samsung. Who knows? Quote:
Ironically there has been a twist in behaviors. Apple usally is tight lipped about the upcoming produts and Google seems to be very vocal. While iOS5 has been heavily tooted, little has been said on Android 4. Verizon is launching the Droid Prime around the same time the iPhone 5 is coming out. The Droid Prime will be a Verizon exclusive that will have Android 4 it will be interesting to see what the result is. =X= |
