It's not that unprecedented a change. Before books, there were scrolls. That sewn binding came in *very* handy, and once codices came along pretty much everyone switched over. Not sure what there was before scrolls. Stone tablets, maybe?

Oh, nonsense Prista your english is great. However I would like to recommend that you read posts and threads on this forum as much as possible. Please notice how we put our sentenses together, english is wierd we speak sort of backwards.

I don't normally read paper books but when my Kobo was away I did revert to reading on paper. I can't stand old paper back books (20-25 years old), I don't know if anyone else notices this but I can't stand the feel of the paper (It's like it's breaking down and turning to dust).

I must be the odd one then. The more that I read e-books the more I like paper better. And the more that a device duplicates the 'sense' of paper, the more I like that particular e-reader.

No, I have not done either nor will I have purposely destroy a perfectly good printed book. I just couldn't do it. As for scanning without destroying, I suppose if I had a decent scanner, the desire and the time, I might give it a try. As of right now, however, I'm perfectly happy paying others reasonable prices to do it instead.
Although it hurts a little, I will not reprimand those who do deconstruct printed books, for I understand the joy and ease of an e-reader over some printed formats. I will, instead, cringe in silence and hope its all for the best.

Better my books be ripped, scanned, and backed up for perpetuity on my many computer backups and cloud sites than lose my entire library when my house burns down. I'll never understand why preserving a book is seen as destroying it.

Its not. Destroying a book is seen as destroying it. If it can be scanned without destruction, then more power to whoever chooses to do it.

When my husband lived out of a backpack, he considered paperbacks disposable--to the extent of tearing out the pages as he finished reading them, in order to not carry as much weight. Made me cringe just hearing about it.

I do keep the books I've chopped & scanned. I rubberband them with their spines, or use binder clips to hold them together. I haven't yet figured out what to do with them, but I'm considering getting them comb-bound (which involves further damage; I'd have to put holes in them) and taping a copy of the spine to the outside of the comb.

I read on my ereader 99% of the time (coming up on 3 years). When I get a library book, hardback, it's a treat. I still love paper books. I love the feel, the smell, the very visual sense of working my way through the book. I love my ereader, it's way more convenient and better in so many ways, but I still love paper, too.

Ever since I started ereading (2 years now) I barely got through a paperbook any more. It's just so unpractical and heavy. And only one book. And no dictionary integrated.
I still have a pile of pbooks (presents), but I find myself checking, if they are available as ebooks already, rather than just reading those. I just can't be bothered.

nahh... i still love paper books. They are wonderful to look at, to read and hold. Besides, so far ebooks have yet to reach the level of formatting and page setting of the good paper books, so they (pbooks) are still more rewarding for me in some cases.

I love both worlds, ebooks and paper.

If you look at the general population and discover that about 75% of everyone over the age of 50 knows little about e-books, you'll be reminded how quickly this phenomenon has slipped into first place with readers. So I know, for instance, that my action-mysteries (when I get them reformatted to e-books) will be my best sellers because they appeal to the younger set.

I do almost all my reading on a Kindle now. I occasionally borrow a book from the library if the e-book is more than I want to pay. I'm reading a hardback right now, in fact. It sure is heavy!

I have no desire to scan paper books in order to read them electronically. It wouldn't be worth the time and effort for me. I don't re-read books, so I feel no particular need to keep them once read.

the only time i ever read on paper now, is if it is something not available on ebook, and I have to read it (work or school normally). It is especially handy for my work stuff, when they're like 2000-3000 page manuals that are more like phonebooks.
