OK - took my after dinner walk - very humid & "close" atmosphere. Gusty.

Finished my storm preps: ran the dishwasher, last load of laundry finishing up, ran the vacuum. Getting ready to settle down with Kindle & cats and see what arrives.

Update: made a few calls and found a place 2 miles away where I can bring my cat. Since it's so close I can leave Saturday afternoon. Also, the storm seems to be weakening.

I'm getting a bit peeved at the Media...
This is a storm. A serious one, to be sure. But still, a storm. The Media is doing it's darndest to turn it into the Monster From Out of the Blue, and scaring the crap out of kids! There is no doubt that people need to prepare for it, and in many cases, move out of its way. But it's still a 'storm.' It's not unknown, and anyone with a lick of sense can take the needed precautions to stay safe. It is NOT something that is going to chase you no matter where you go...

I think it is important that information is given, because it is maybe "only" a 2 but it is as large as Kathrina was, and as Fbone says, the ground is already saturated, so there is a risk of floods.

Keep safe everyone.

Your right, it IS important that information is given, and given in a timely fashion so people can take the proper precautions BEFORE there is loss of human life. And that IS being done. It just doesn't need to be done in a histrionic fashion the way much of Big Media is doing.

We KNOW there will be flooding... so get out of the area.
We KNOW there will be wind damage... so get out of the area.
We have been warned far enough in advance to board up the windows, move outside furniture to a safer place, to stock up on life-support items such as food, water, batteries, toilet paper, and Oreo cookies.

We do NOT need to frighten the little children with monsters in the dark.

Checking in this morning - Irene has weakened to a category 1 - and is on land - on the coast rather than the islands. So storm surge will be a significant problem in the inlets.

Inland - lots of rain & wind - just a matter of time before trees or limbs start coming down - along with the power lines - we're hunkered down here - all OK.

I had taken in the squirrel feeder last night - and found a pack of squirrels on the deck this morning looking for breakfast. I had to relent and replace it - unless the winds pick up too much.

Stitchy, I need to chip in here. When the storm was making a beeline for S. Fl, I needed all of the info that I could get. No doubt, there are other hurricane novices out there in fear and needing info. Frankly, they couldn't repeat the story often enough for my own comfort. So please be patient with us.

As I said before, there is a very definite need for information. I've never said otherwise. I guess I wasn't clear enough. Here is what I wrote:

I only object to the histrionics. Repeat the facts over and over. Be sure everyone gets the information they need. Just leave out the monster stories. I'm still hearing that all of Japan is radioactive... Facts are fine. Media foolishness to raise ratings is another.

Listen everyone, there is no need for the facts to get in the way of a good story. Hurricanes, taxes etc.
It's really hard to turn a cat 5 into a cat 1 without as much spin as we do in politics.
So batten down the hatches anyway. A storm is a storm is a storm and someone will use it.
Pass the jelly beans.

I DO think you must be getting more "monster stories" there than we are. We're pretty much just getting the official weather info -- not even front page news here for us today. Of course, I'm only watching/reading local news here, not national, but I'll bet that is what most people in the hurricane areas are watching --their local news.

Power outages starting. The computer just lost power and I rebooted just long to say so long for an undetermined time. The outer edge of Irene should reach us in about three hours. Cheers!
