Anymore, it's nothing more than a popularity contest. If you want to really build up your karma, just visit the Lounge and start posting some funny stuff. You'll get points fast and it won't be long before you go over one million points.

And welcome to the board

Now for another lesson. Is there a way to check who you have given karma to? Just in case we're old and forget.

Nope. You cannot give someone Karma without spreading it around to other people first and you will get a notice telling you that.

"Nothing more than a popularity contest?"

That's like saying "I'm just a teacher" or "it's only murder."
Why so dismissive? Any democratic election is "nothing more than a popularity contest."
What could be more important on a community forum than the opinion of the population? What other value does a public post have but to garner reaction from the public?
I'd find somewhat disingenuous if not downright pathetic for someone to post publicly and then claim they don't care what people think. That's what diaries and journals are for.

Man, you're putting way too much into this karma thing. Karma is essentially meaningless. Rarely do I give it out for informative posts, because that's the standard for boards such as this. I mostly give it out for the funny stuff.

Not quite the answer to the question they were asking. They wanted to know if you could see who you've already given Karma to, which would be helpful so you can better spread it.

My comment had little to do with karma. It had to do with popularity contests.
But yes, karma for funny posts is like audience laughs for a comedian. That's the most important thing.

I think the point he was making is that there isn't always a correlation between karma and the usefulness or trustworthiness of a posters comments. I have fairly low karma, but I think many people have found my posts more useful and trustworthy than my karma would indicate.

I think Karma is a silly thing given for so many reasons that it really does not mean much. I recognize that my Karma is high because I have had fun posting in the drink thread and my friends there give me karma for posts giving info on tea and advice relationship. Heck, people are getting karma now to make palidromes.

And I am ok with that. I think that it is fun and goofy and perfectly legit.

This does mean that Karma really is based on being in the right topics and having fun with your friends which makes it a bit of a popularity contest.

(shrugs)

Like I said, not a big deal but there is nothing wrong with calling it what it is.

I give karma for helpful posts, just about everyone who has given me advice in the tablet thread has gotten karma, but I give karma for making me smile, mainly in threads like this one or the drink thread. The smile karma does tend to go to the same people more often then not.

Indeed. My only point was don't say "popularity contest" with a contemptuous frown. Say it with an enthusiastic smile!
Or even with Sally Field-like appreciation: "You like me, you really like me!"
