When possible, I make both versions. However, for some of my complex publications, after many days of work I came to the conclusion that it is impossible to create a comparable epub (at least with all of the original features).
I agree that for typical books this is not an issue. |

Okay, I have a question for those of you who need ePub books.
My husband's book is available as both Kindle e-book and paperback at Amazon. The Amazon Kindle version is DRM-free, but I realize that not everyone wants to (or knows how to) convert a file from Kindle format to ePub. I'm a Kindle user myself, and I must confess that I know little about other devices and where ePub readers purchase their e-books. My question is, if an ePub version is made available at Barnes & Noble online, would that be sufficient for users of ePub devices other than Nook? |

Thanks, starrigger. I've been considering Smashwords too, but I'm not pleased that they only accept MS Word files and then convert to the various formats through their automated process. Frankly, I've seen quite a few Smashwords books that don't look very good.
I prefer to have direct control over the end result, as proper formatting is very important to me. I hand-coded the HTML for the Kindle edition, and I'm very pleased with the results. But I don't want to exclude international ePub purchasers, so it may be necessary to include Smashwords as a distribution channel. |

The problem with B&N, is while they use ePub, they use their own proprietary DRM. Can you upload to B&N without DRM, or is it manditory? If it is mandatory, then it would only be useful for a small portion of ePub users. Even if they did do DRM free, how many non nook users would buy from B&N? I know I don't go there since everything I've seen from them has DRM, and I don't have a nook. You may want to consider a place that supports the most common form of DRM, because even if you have your book available as DRM free, people will expect it to have DRM. Kobo may be a good choice, since I know they allow for DRM free books (although they have had a few issues with a publisher's books accidentally getting DRM slapped on. But that is being rectified as far as I know).
If you do not go the smashwords route, due to their submission process, then you may be best off manually submitting it to the multiple various stores they link to. Sticking with one store may alienate potential buyers who would expect the items they buy from that store to be incompatible with their reader. The only ones you'd manage to keep, are those who have the device supported by that store, or the ones who are specifically seeking your book and plan on stripping DRM and converting it if need be (which I'd say is a small group of people). |
