Just completed The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton. I thought the storyline interesting unique even and the writing improved as it went along. The first 30 pages were not impressive, though. I'd grade it a C+ [3 stars] for suspense and mild twist at the end although not totally unexpected.

Next is more classic sci-fi with Way Station by Clifford Simak.

I think it's the worst book in the whole series.

I have decided, however, that win or lose (September 2011 Mobile Read Book Club Vote ), I will read Storm Front - book 1 of the Dresden Files.
i'll be real interested to hear how you liked it.

i've read the first 7 rachel morgan books, and i'll agree that they run a bit hot & cold (or i do concerning them) but i keep going back to read another one so most things about the story/characters must be right..

Interesting fantasy, but dragged a little. Perhaps it was me. It did pick up at the end, and I'm quite keen to see if the new character continues in the next book.

Next: Misson of Honor by David Weber. The next in the Honor Harrington series, that actually came out last year but that I've only just bought.

I'm 3/4 through with it and while I'm enjoying it, it's not a 'grab you by the seat of the pants' thriller. It does keep my attention though. I almost put it down after the first chapter, but push on. Glad I did.

Those are the first negative comments I have heard about Lock Artist. It was my favorite read in 2010.

I did read some reviews about The Magician's Nephew on GoodReads and a lot of people felt the same way about it that I did. Fortunately it was a quick read. I know it's supposed to explain how Narnia came to be, but it doesn't explain about why Narnia came to be.

Finished two books today, one fiction and the other non-fiction.

The fiction was Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett. Not my favorite book by this author, although it was on Time magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels published between 1923 and 2005. I thought it was plum weird how the main character never gives his name. He identifies himself three different times using three different aliases, but when all is said and done, we know him only as the operative from the Continental Detective Agency.

The other was On Writing by Stephen King. A wonderful book on the art that includes, along with his personal tips and advice, quite a bit of insight into his personal life and how it has affected his writing.

Dresden: I'll gladly share my thoughts when I'm done.

Rachel: The series is weird that way. I read the first 5 or 6 two years ago. I can't tell you why I like it, just thatIi do and that I would highly recommend it. I think its the characters - You want to know what they're going to do, not do, say or not say. I found Jenks annoying my first time around but now I love him; I thought Rachel was picked on, but realize that she brings most of the drama on herself; I had no idea what to think of Ivy, and can now see the "human" side of her, etc.

I don't usually read Science Fiction but this author was mentioned in this thread
The book sounded interesting so I am starting with the first in the series Space Junque (Apocalypto 1)

The DOGs want to destroy the world. The gods want to make a new one. The trick is to survive both.

On the brink of a world-wide ecological cataclysm set off by the Oil Spill of 2010 and the Great Sea Level Rise of 2070, hydroponics agronomist Char Meadowlark has become a recluse. Her fiance was killed by a terrorist bomb, and her twin sister Sky has gone underground to protect a top secret energy project. Warned about an impending eco-terrorist attack, Char tries to get off planet, but the Defenders of Gaia strike while she's at the airport. Shuttle pilot Jake Ardri might offer her only hope.

When the DOGs' onslaught goes global and the material world threatens to implode, the ancient gods reemerge to take control over humanity. Now Char has to juggle two men, a world on fire, and a goddess with an agenda for a new world order.
= = = = = =
novella, about 28,000 words or 112 pages
= = = = = =

Space Junque is a fun, smart read, and I really think people will enjoy it. I hesitate to make comparisons, but I think it has a bit of a Firefly vibe to it. -- Anne Frasier

EDIT: I finished the first book in the series (only 90 pages) considering I do not normally go for science fiction this was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the story and the characters in the story, I'm looking forward to the second in the series. I will start the second Spiderwork tomorrow...

i'm reading Verdant Skies by Steven Lyle Jordan, he's an author on this site. I'm not really into SF but this a very interesting read. No wacky terms or outrageous alien scenarios, just good, realistic SF.
