Tim is freaking out. I'm maintaining my outward cool, but last night, I had a double nightmare. In the dream, the hurricane struck where I used to work, because in the dream, I also had the horror of being not yet retired!

I'm not sure how concerned we should be. But the local news is showing runs on groceries and Home Depot by people who remember surviving the big ones of the past.

They tell of being without power for weeks after Wilma in 2005. That seems to be the biggest worry.

Advice would be appreciated.

I'm preparing for a long-term power outage. Dug out the Coleman coolers, putting the blue ice packs in the freezer, filling all the ice cube trays. Buying a weeks worth of bottled water (for me & the cats), Pepsi, crackers, peanut butter, breakfast bars - basically anything that don't need cooking. Of course batteries. Neighbor has a gas grill - if power stays off we'll grill up the meat in our freezers. Charge up your cellphones, ereaders, etc. If you have large windows, maybe a tarp in case of a break/crack. Do all your laundry the night before it hits. If your water supply depends on electricity, fill your tubs & sinks - so you can still flush toilets.

I've just read the NOAA Climate Prediction Center's report this month which says: "Along with a few other models, the latest runs from the NCEP Climate Forecast System (CFS) models predict La Niña to re-develop during the fall." That's dreadful news. The La Niña we were in until recently contributed (together with the stubborn high pressure dome that has hung over us all summer) to our incredible drought. Cool Pacific ocean temperatures lead to low moisture levels in the air blowing over the southern U.S. blowing our way and often lead to very dry winters here. If we're headed back into a La Niña, we really are looking at some serious trouble in the southern U.S. over the coming 10 months or more.

Tim wants to go across the state to Ft Myers or someplace along the Gulf coast.

From watching the Weather Channel, it looks like you guys are in a worse situation than us. They keep invoking the memory of Fran. I wish you and your family and cats would get out of there, instead of riding it out.

Yeah - if it follows Fran's track, we're screwed! I was without electricity for over a month after Fran. And had a tree leaning against my house!

Other preparations for living without electricity:
refill any prescription meds you need
wash your hair
get some cash (check cards/credit cards won't work)

Ditto here. We lost nearly 40 trees on our family property during Fran. We're hunkering down as well.
