Hi, I've been trying the methods described in this thread and had no success.

I can do it so fast now that the first screen I see is the Kindle update screen (after the USB screen flashes). I've used the batch file, tried unregistering, and everything.

I get an error message that I can find no where else mentioned on the web in reference to this: "U006". Nobody in this thread seems to have it and only one person on your blog does (with no solution).

I did previously jailbreak the Kindle and installed a few things (launchpad and the ss hack, which I removed later cause I wanted the offers), but every hack I try fails (U007). I've ran both your jailbreak's uninstall and the old 0.7N uninstall and they both fail as well. I also re-ran the launchpad uninstall and the ss hack uninstall.

Any tips?

Edit: Note that if I do it too slowly on purpose, I get a U007 instead of a U006. If I do it wrong on purpose (restart with firmware on Kindle), I get a U004 instead of a U006.

My kindle updated itself to 3.2.1 while I wasn't paying attention and broke both wifi and the scripts I was running which relied upon it. Sad times. I'm now trying to implement this on a kindle 3 wifi with rather little success.

I've reset to factory defaults. Wifi is off. Documents is empty, and called documents.bak for good measure. A script checks to see if the kindle is available at a rate of once a second, and as soon as it can, the update is copied across and the kindle unmounted. I'm getting fairly good at hitting restart too, on ten tries or so.

At a bit of a loss. Sad times.

Hi everybody... actually u don't need to reset your Kindle and hurry up to plug your cable in ... and swear because your Kindle isn't detected by your OS on time.,, if you have Mac Os or linux, just open terminal/ console and copy update*.bin file using dd command.
for example if the downloaded folder is in Downloads you just type

dd if=/Users/YOUR_NAME/Downloads/kindle-3.2.1-jailbreak-0.5/update_jailbreak_0.5_k3w_install.bin of=/Volumes/Kindle/update_jailbreak_0.5_k3w_install.bin

The command you've quoted does exactly the same thing as cp would have. You're reading from a file, to a file. Typo?

I'm giving up on this for the time being.

That's what exactly I did - copied the update file onto the Kindle and then ran the update, which ended up with saying "Successful" at the end.
The only thing I still can't figure out - is there any way to figure out it's certainly jail-broken? Any comment(s) from any one? Cheers!!

Thank you yifanlu. Renamed documents and system folders as suggested and hack worked first try! Easy peasy

I received success messages on the first try with this jailbreak & the ss file on the first try; if something had gone wrong, I'd have received some sort of error message, yes? I've restarted the kindle a couple times, but still have no new folder created on the kindle to start putting screens in. Thoughts?

Let me begin by saying that I bought a Kindle 3G ad-supported version.

I'm fine with ads for the most part, the ad banner on the main menu is perfectly acceptable. However, I find fullscreen screensaver ads obnoxious. I despise the fact that I'm not allowed to use my own custom screensavers on my device. What's the point in showing a fullscreen screensaver ad anyway? It's not like I can click it!

Anyway, what I'd like to achieve here is custom screensavers (a map of Middle Earth looks pretty awesome on the screen), whilst keeping the banner ad on the main menu. However, if I replace the screensvr.gif images in \system\.assets\234198723 & such folders, the system realises it and COMPLETELY eliminates ALL ads and replaces them with "Please connect wirelessly to download the latest special offers" images.

Needless to say, that's pretty stupid. No more ads show, period. Once that happens, nothing I do short of a factory reset will get the ads to show up again. This is a loss for Amazon. I want to meet at a middleground, not completely disable ads like this option does quite simply, and not have to deal with lame fullscreen ads for screensavers.

I just want my custom screensavers!

Tried this quite a few times on my UK Kindle 3.2.1 WiFi, which is a replacement for a broken 3.1, which had custom screensavers working just fine.

No joy so far on this new one, despite being super-speedy with copying over the jailbreak file - any ideas?

I successfully applied the Jailbreak to my 3.2.1 UK Kindle last week.

One idea (thing to check) I read somewhere that you should dothe Jailbreak without any books loaded. I renamed my "documents" folder before I applied the update. When the update had finished I deleted the newly created "documents" folder and renamed back again my original folder.

Good luck - it is possible.

Hmmm... Tried loads more this evening and still all fails.

I've got wifi turned off.
I rename my documents & system folder.
I unplug the USB cable.
I initiate a restart.
During the restart I connect the USB cable and then use the following DOS command to copy the jailbreak file over as soon as the Kindle is seen:
for /l %i in (1,1,10000000) do dir E: && copy C:\Kindle\kindle-3.2.1-jailbreak-0.5\update_jailbreak_0.5_k3w_install.bin E: && exit
(I previously just tried copying quickly, but went for this automated approach when it wasn't working).
I then remove the USB cable.
I request an Update Your Kindle.
The Kindle starts the update, then fails the the U0007 error in the bottom left of the screen.

Not sure what I can do to improve on this? And, just to check, as long as the copy is done immediately on the availability of the Kindle, there's no timing requirements afterwards, right?

Perhaps installing Duokan helps with Jailbreak?

Have you installed Duokan? I did on mine and one of the requirements for that was no Jailbreak - see link use Google Translate to decode it!. So I did install Duokan first. See my post on installing Duokan. Maybe that somehow then helps the installation of the Jailbreak. I really had no problems installing Jailbreak the first time I tried. I do have the UK 3g version and not the wifi version too.

Well, here's a bizarre thing. Having torn my hair out trying & failing to install the jailbreak, I tried installing the screensaver hack - and it worked! So did I maybe succeed in jailbreaking one of the times that I thought I'd failed? Or has something else caused the screensaver hack to work?

Either way, I'm now happy, and can carry on using my replacement Kindle like the original.
