Kindle for PC 1.7 and "the tools"?

Anyone tried yet? Does it still work OK, or has the 1.7 upgrade broken it again?

I haven't heard yet either. It'd be nice if they changed it up and didn't break things for once.

Hi,

Just testing things with my Win 7 running under Parallels and all worked just fine with the current tools.

What's new in 1.7? Does Amazon put the release notes anywhere? I have 1.6.0 and I'm not happy with it and thought to downgrade but now curious to see if 1.7 made anything any better.

ther is also a 1.6.1.

But there usually is a feature upgrade of some kind when that second number changes. I'm in no hurry to upgrade and find out though. Somebody will come along soon and tell us.

That why I upgraded only to 1.6.0 then my 700+ books would no longer open after I ran my temp cleaner and it deregister the program.

Never happen with 1.4.1 so I'm not too happy with the program right now.

@Blossom: Don't blame Amazon for that, blame the cleaner program. These really are dangerous and unnecessary programs and I strongly recommend not using them.

That being said, I haven't found any compelling reason to move from 1.4.1 yet, and haven't had any issues with it and any book I've bought from Amazon. And it works just fine with the current tools, thank you.

Some cleaner programs will destroy your OS and you'll have to reinstall.

Hmm I've been using temp file cleaners program since ME and never had any real issues. I recommend using them because virus and worms hide in these folders and that can destroy your system. There is alot of cleaners out there that are fake. So yes you have to be careful but programs like CCleaner are trustworthy. I can't tell how many times they have save my system. I have stop using the cleaner program that caused the problem even though it does a good job getting rid of java baddies. I'm just using CCleaner for now and having to manually delete the rest.

The first thing we use to tell people in security forums where I use to help those infected was to run a cleaner program, then hijackthis and so on. Too many viruses are caught by ads, popups and scripts.

Now Registry cleaners are entire matter separately and must be used with the utmost care.

I'm still trying to track down what file it deleted to cause the issue.

I tend to agree, Blossom. Deleting temporary files should never cause issues after programs are installed (if the programs aren't shady). If that's all your cleaner program does, then I see no issue (except in this case, of course). Like you mentioned, registry "cleaners" can wreak havok. There's no way for those kind of programs to "automatically" know what's safe to remove—and should never be trusted to delete stuff without user interaction of some sort (if ever).

That's why I am baffled. All ATF-Cleaner does is clean the User Temp, Windows Temp and Internet Temp folders, Java cache, Browser history, cookies and recycle bin. It's a small program, doesn't need installation and not that powerful like CCleaner.

Amazon change the location of the files that contain register info obviously in version 1.6.0. I'm gonna go ahead and upgrade to 1.7 because I've notice some choppiness on 1.6.0 when switching
from archive and downloaded.

1.6.0 was buggy it would not stay registered for me at all, every time I started it I had to re-register. On two separate computers it would not run for me, I don't think the problem was caused by your temp cleaner...

I have seen a few people saying it would not stay registered for them.
