I view it this way

I may not be a huge fan of Microsoft but you have
to thank them for making the PC so mainstream.

Same with the Kindle, You may not love them but
they sure had a part in making e-Readers popular

I don't think it's that much of a problem, with agency pricing taking over everything there is no advantage to the publisher to go with an exclusive deal. exclusives we never be more then a very small percentage.

Funny, but I think MS actually held back PCs. If not for their unfair practices, BETTER GUI and OS technology would have advanced PCs farther faster, but
I think Amazon did indeed light the fire in the ebook world.

Some (guess who) might claim that Amazon has done just the same as I say MS did, but I disagree.

But they do and that's the problem. Take a look at Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine. They went Kindle only even though they previously sold in multi-format. It's like they didn't care about customers who don't do Kindle.

Ever hear of multi-quote JSWolf? For someone who was carping about how bad it was for people to top post, you certainly don't seem to mind having several posts in a row.

I started into computers over 30 years ago.

I have no love for MS but they did help get things moving

MS is not at fault here. Commodore is. They had the Amiga and the engineering team on the Amiga has a really nice next generation Amiga and the people at the top did not allow it to be released. If the engineering team had their way, we'd be using The Amiga. The MAC would be dead now.

Me too! I first learned programming on a TRS-80 Model 1. I think I was 9.

Sure, but things might have gotten moving better with a different windowing GUI (perhaps derived from X or GEOS) running faster and more reliably on less powerful hardware, or with perhaps a more robust OS (maybe derived from *NIX) that didn't require rebooting after every odd look.

Not X or NIX.. AmigaDOS was an awesome OS. It actually ran well in 512meg of ram. The computer had true multi-tasking with support chips for the graphics and the sound. It was ahead of it's time and Commodore mismanaged the hell out of it.

But then you'd have had to have an Amiga. Unless video editing suddenly became the main business in the world (Video Toaster!), the Amiga was never going to go mainstream, any more than an SGI workstation would have gone mainstream.
The topic of this increasingly off-topic tangent is if or how MS put PCs (read IBM PCs) into the mainstream, not what put computers in general into the mainstream. That was inarguably (ha!) IBM's business clout combined with spreadsheet programs and word processors. A business company making business machines that could do business tasks. The IBM PC would have won that battle no matter if they got their OS from MS or DEC or AT&T or Joe Blow. No video-heavy game machine like the Amiga, nor a hacker's darling like my Apple II, stood a chance.

Yeh, It was an excellent computer that was way ahead of its time. Unfortunately CBM didn't market it properly. i have a 1000 and a 2000 that still work. Preemptive multitasking in 256 k. The Macintosh didn't have preemptive multitasking until OS 10 hows that for being innovative?
