Hi All,

We recognize the storage error that keeps popping up for some folks is an issue and we are working on investigating the cause and providing a fix in an upcoming release. Thanks all for your feedback and help.

Sameer.

*sigh* Got hit by the random factory reset just now as I tried to sync it after subscribing to a (free trial, anyways, to see how these things end up looking and performing) newspaper through Kobo... Kobo Desktop was the first and only software used, too, while my KT was connected.

Cheers. Then in that case I cannot see how the kobo filesystem would still be mounted. It must be a clean disconnect.

cutterjohn and p_a_smith make a good point that it could be the firmware leaving files open. That is a another possible mechanism.

This is a good point, like p_a_smith, etc.
It was the ext4 story that made me lean toward the unmounting as the cause in the first place. Certainly ext4 has made programmers who relied on the 5 second flush of ext3 to clean up their act.

But if your Kobo internal flash has not been written to by another computer then it can't be external app like ADE or Calibre or Kobo Desktop causing the file corruption.

Specifically, not that anyone asked, I loaded the software, then hooked up the Kobo, connected, messed around in the library view a bit (guess you can't read magazines via the desktop software 'cos I couldn't find it anywhere), then hit the Sync button. Maybe 5 seconds in, I got the error and had to reset. (second go at it, after reinstalling to 1.9.9, worked properly)

Hi all,

I'm new to eBooks and this forum, but as I got an unexpected gift (Kobo Touch) from my better half last saturday I thought I should had a few data points to the discussion. First of all I am not a computer newbie, and I mostly use a Win7 computer.

To sum up my experience with the device, I had to do four factory resets in the first three days (1 saturday within an hour of opening the box, 1 sunday and 2 yesterday - none today but it's only morning and I haven't played with it yet).

What I did:
- find free ebooks with the Desktop application and sync them to the reader
- drag and drop some PDF files I had on the PC (manuals and tech documentation - the font sizing problem hit me right away)
- find free eBooks on Project Gutenberg and upload them to the Touch, first via drag&drop, then with ADE, then with Calibre
- find free french language eBooks from various sources and upload them with Calibre (incidentally, I would have expected a unit sold in Canada to come in french as well as english - since I'm travelling in BC, soon to go back home, I hope the french version of the FW is not too far down the road or the kids won't be able to use it).

The problems has happened when disconnecting after dropping files, when synching with the desktop application after dropping files or uploading them with ADE or Calibre, or even when opening a new book on the unit after reading another one.

It seems random, the message is unspecific at best, and there doesn't seem to be a way out of it save for resetting everything, reinstalling the FW 1.9.9, configuring it again and synching books back to it.

Since I like the format of the unit and it is a gift, I have been going out of my way to get it to work for me but it is a tiring, tedious process. I can sort of get along with it at the moment, but I wouldn't buy another unit for my wife or kids as it is!

this is my experience so far. I hope it gets better, much better, soon...

Francois

EDIT: After reading a book and putting down the unit this afternoon it went to standby as expected. But when I took it out of standby, I got a frozen screen. No amount of touching it would do anything, nor going to standby again. And after I powered it down, surprise surprise, on power up I got the error!

I am having this same problem. I do not use Calibre and eject using the remove hardware safely and it is still happening. I have opened a trouble ticket with Kobo and I hope that they get this fixed soon or I may have to return it and get something else.

Marbles; there has been a posting made over on the GetSatisfaction board advising people that a reset is not needed, and that you can ignore this message while we all wait for a fix to be made available.

Hi I did the hard reset last night and now I can't get the currently being read book to show up on the home page after I bookmark it and go back to home page. I have to search my library for it to get it again .. Any suggestions ???

Thanks in advance.

Did you set the clock after the reset?

Ah. Nice feature! My WiFi could use that (hint). Does it know the time zone too?

I've also had all sorts of problems with using the Kobo Desktop App and the Calibre app.
Since I've completely stopped using the Kobo Desktop app, no problems.
So I won't be using the Kobo Desktop app until an update to fix this is released.

Yes, and without needing to be prompted for location info, which probably means it'll adjust to local time at where ever you happen to connect from (while traveling, for example).
