It's the story of an almost over-the-hill sword jockey turned P.I. in an interesting mixed up world. Far out but not too far out. Clever concepts, fun dialogs, and interesting enough to keep me turning the pages. I'll be sorry to finish it.

I read it via audiobook while faceting a gemstone. Very good story to listen to when your hands are busy.

I consider Shogun to be the best book I have ever read! Accurate in culture and locations, the plot moves right along despite long descriptive passages. If you enjoy it, be sure to read the other three of the Asian quadrilogy, Tai-pan, King Rat, and Noble House. Do try to read them in order if you can.

I think of it as the perfect modern fairytale. Loved it to pieces.

Just started reading Into The Wild - Jon Krakauer

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter....

It's beautifully written and I'm really enjoying it. Unfortunately, my attention span when it comes to reading is very short at the moment so I keep picking up shorten books to read in between.

I am planning reading the other books in the series, but I'll wait until I'm in the mood for a long read so I can focus on the story better.

Wow - that sounds like an amazing book! Doesn't seem to be available in ebook, at least in Australia. I'll keep my eye open for that one.

It is a great book, as long as you remember that much of it is conjecture pieced together from a handful of eyewitness accounts after McCandless abandoned his car, and from a few physical clues where his body was found Alaska. Krakauer creates what I like to call near non-fiction. Just like Junger did with the Andrea Gail in The Perfect Storm. There's nothing wrong with that at all. I just think it's important to keep it in mind when reading.

Into Thin Air is another book of his that's great. It tells of a tragic Mount Everest Expedition that Krakauer himself was actually a member of.

He's excellent at what he does, but I just don't take his words as "gospel truth" (which is not meant to be as critical as it may sound).

Into Thin Air is available for $9.99, for what it's worth. I don't know why the price is staying so high for these older books.

Hmmm - actually I was thinking this was a novel "based on a true story" which I thought would be a blindingly good read - if written well of course. However, if it's actually released as a non-fiction style, then I'm not quite as interested. But you never know.
