Got a second generation ipod touch here.
High res screen like the iphone 4.
Good for music, reading, games and more.

It's well, if you want a phone, get a nokia or whatnot, their battery will last weeks.
Iphone etc, they wont last more than two days.

Ipod for fun, nokia for calling people.

i have an iPod touch second gen and love it. I dont really need an iPhone but really like having all the options that the iPT brings to the table: ereader, apps, music etc. If they introduce a new model this year I may even upgrade as after almost 3 years my battery does not last as long.

Only the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G (iPt4) have the Retina high resolution (960 x 640) screen. The iPod touch 1G, 2G, and 3G have the low resolution (480 x 320) screen.

I've got a iPt4. I love it except for the lackluster battery life. I used it a lot before I got a good smartphone (Motorola Atrix 4G), now I use the phone for everything and the iPt4 sits on a shelf collecting dust. Like I said I love the iPt4 and used it prior to getting a good smartphone, but I prefer everything to be in one device. I always hated carrying two devices. I never considered the iPhone as every friend and family member who has one has difficulty holding calls and their iPhones sound terrible when you talk to them. It is a joke around here that if the person you were talking to was not hearable or kept losing their connection, they most be on an iPhone.

Um.. the 2nd gen iPod Touch does not have the hi-res screen like the iPhone 4. Not at all.

Definitely true here in the SF Bay Area, at least, even after 5 years. Oddly enough in my case, almost every friend and family member 1) complains about the service/call quality and 2) has an iPhone I don't make a lot of calls, but not sure why anyone who depended on voice calls could have stuck with AT&T/iPhone for all this time. I've heard Verizon's version works much better here, but I don't know anyone who has switched.

I prefer having two devices - a 32GB iPod touch 4 and an old school flip phone. My iPt4 spends most of its time at home being used as an audio streamer - AOL Radio, HiDef Radio, TuneIn Radio, Radio.com, BBC Radio, etc. I also use it for podcasts, audiobooks, videos, news, and games. It's a great device to have in your pocket when traveling because it lets you stay connected to the world and provides a wealth of information about the places you're visiting.

As long as data plans are required, I'll never get a smartphone. Besides, the money saved is enough to get a brand new 32GB iPod touch every year.

If an Android touch ever appears, I'll jump ship and switch.

Thanks for sharing your " flow" with us, TM. My (now) wife is a big audiobooks person, and likes some music too.
My flow is similar to us, but I use my iPad instead. I carry it to and from work in my messenger bag daily.

My flow is similar to yours, but I carry an iPad around. It goes in my messenger bag to and from work every day and I listen to music, podcasts, read ebooks (on the metro) and occasionally play games.

Thanks. I also have several speaker docks scattered about the house. That way, I can take my radio streams and audiobooks with me as I move from room to room. At first, I moved my speaker dock from room to room, but that got to be a pain in the neck mighty fast. So I bought a few more docks and scattered them about (bedrooms, kitchen, study, living room, etc).

For the kitchen, I got a smaller dock - the iHome iP11 (less than $40 at Costco). I placed it in an upper cupboard (drilled a small hole in the bottom for the power cord) so it was out of the way from kitchen spills and splashes. It stays there permanently. It makes working in the kitchen very pleasant now.

Anyway, something for you to consider getting along with the iPod.

I was already paying for a $20 data plan on my feature phone (check email, browse text-heavy sites, etc) prior to getting an iPhone so the required data plan isn't a big deal. Since I frequently use my phone where I don't have WiFi, I would have paid for a data plan either way. Have to admit, though, my feature phone was way better for calls despite both being on AT&T.

By the way, non-smartphone Android devices already exist. Unfortunately, they're usually either $400+ tablets, really old 1.5 Cupcakes or Chinese no-names.

I'm totally happy with wifi and its availability where I live; so I have no need for a data plan.

I already have a 7" Android tablet - Nook Color CM7 - and am quite happy with it. Just need a 4" version so I only have to deal with one OS. Samsung was supposed to release the Galaxy S WiFi here in the States; but so far, nothing. So I wait and use an iPod touch until then.

I'll say. Just wish Steve wasn't so obsessed with thin. The touch keeps getting thinner and thinner each year. When I take my touch out and about, I place it in an OtterBox case to bulk it up and protect it.
