I always convert to epub format so that I can actually read the book as intended on my Sony reader. Of course this often requires first removing the DRM restriction so allowing me to use the book I have purchased. Actually removing the DRM is something I always do, even for books purchased in epub format. This is why I have been reluctant to purchase from Amazon recently, even if they offer a better price. It is my understanding that it is no longer possible to get rid of the new DRM they apply and this would make my purchase useless to me.

 It's Apple's ebook DRM that can't be removed. |

I buy whatever format I can find, and use Calibre to convert it all to epub. Seems fairly easy to convert from epub to other formats at need and all my current readers use epub.

I probably could have stated it more eloquently, but it's really just the same frustration I had with Minidisc (Sony's stupidity), DVD-R/+R, and then HD-DVD/Blu-Ray... I understand that everybody is trying to get a slice of the pie, but it seems like they're all trying to get their own, very specific slice. It seems to me that the affected industry would probably benefit more from unification, seeing as there would be no confusion in the marketplace (which actually keeps some consumers from entering it at all, waiting for the eventual unification to occur). It's less about which format is better, and more that I just freakin' wish everybody would pick one so we wouldn't have to worry about what books are going to work where, and conversion, and all that other idiocy.

Once we standardize on ePub, we then have to either remove DRM or standardize on Adept DRM before we do away with DRM.

There really is no reason for Amazon to keep supporting Mobipocket given that it's two formats out of date. |

I only read / use epub. I have had poor experiences with books in PDF format. If the title is in the public domain I will convert it with Calibre. All other titles I buy from Sony.

Because I use a Kindle device, I read mostly .mobi and .azw files. I do have a few PDFs, but it can be a hassle to read them on the Kindle. Using landscape orientation does help sometimes, though.

PDF is a HORRIBLE format for ereaders. If I get stuck with a PDF, I take a stab at converting it. If it comes out reasonably well, I'll put some effort in to clean it up and fix the formatting, depending on how badly I want to read it. Otherwise, I'll just read something else. I have a long to read list.

With geographic restrictions, I buy what format I can, then convert it.

Calibre is my friend in that regard. My preference is ePUB as all my readers have chosen that format to be the preferred format. |
