Howdy from Ocala,FL

I've posted on other MR topics, but missed this one. I'm new to the ebook scene, but am now an addict I have been reading ebooks on my Nokia N800 since 11/07, and enjoyed it so much I purchased a Nokia 770 for my wife who is addicted as well!

I'm awaiting delivery of a Sony PRS-505 Silver (Tuesday) with bated breath! Thanks for the great community.

Welcome to MobileRead.

I'm curious, what made you get a 505 instead of a Cybook?

Hello Jeff. Waving at you from somewhere in New Mexico!

I've been reading on my Kindle all day long as hubby is driving cross-country. On Tuesday, I downloaded the Tom Corbett series from Feedbooks. Today, I've read the first two in the series and have started on the third. It's so nice having a series at your finger-tips so you can just keep reading.

Price and US availability Nate. I'm also a bit more comfortable with Sony as a brand that won't disappear. I am envious of the Cybook's .mobi support though.

Thanks so much for the Tom Corbett link! I actually used to work with the actor's wife (she was an ICU RN ) and she gave me a autographed headshot photo that I have somewhere...

I just obtained the entire run of the 1930s Doc Savage pulps in PDF (which for some insane reason are not public domain) and am looking forward to devouring them. I do own the majority in Ballantine paperbacks from the 60's.

Jeff,

Hello and welcome neighboor. I am "right down the street" from you in Tampa, really not the city, north of there but the post office still calls Tampa.

Not to worry. Generally what is in mobi is also in lit which is easily convertable into LRF.

I'm not so sure. I think Mobipocket is more likely to survive than Sony. After all, it's owned by Amazon. And Amazon is out to rule the world.

As for the Cybook itself, the worst Bookeen could do is stop selling it. And in the current market that's not gonna happen.

I'm sorry what? Sony is a much bigger company than Amazon. I posted the annual revenues and profits of each company somewhere.

The same is true for the Sony. The reader will continue to work and you will continue to be able to get books for it from Fictionwise, Baen, etc.

I misspoke before. What I meant to say was I think there is a better chance of Sony giving up on the 505 sometime in the future because if isn't profitable enough.

In your opinion.

I think Sony was actually the first to provide an iTunes like book reader experience. Where they fell down was not enough content and prices higher than pbooks.

Amazon was willing to loose money on the ebooks and also was able to get alot more content. I think Sony is working to correct this. We'll just have to see how it shakes out.

This I think is also why the CyBook is more. They don't have any back-end revenue stream hooked to their readers, so they have to make profit on every unit sold. They also have to have more features than others to be able to justify the extra price, compared to the Sony for example.

I've already started the conversion process. I'm going to keep mobi as my base format for a while given that it works on my Nokias so well, and conversion to lrf is so easy.

The Sony Has Landed

UPS just dropped of my 505 and boy is it gorgeous! I've got it charging now (but read a few pages first.) My wife and I were amazed at the clarity of the screen, and I can't wait to dive in and get to reading! The "flash" when turning pages is no more than the blink of an eye.

I'm in love
