I traded some of my karma for photos from the Pet thread. I really find THIS thread somewhat absurd. Are people so worried that others might have more karma than they do? The Mods do a wonderful job of keeping this place comfortable and friendly. Why look for more problems? Stitchawl's sockpuppet | ||||

Someone decided to start a Karma swap thread and that basically was the death of Karma.

Seeing the triumphant return of our great Aussie Tour de France champion, Cadel Evans, on the news last night reminded me of our popular refrain for sporting heroes (with a slight twist)... "Karma Aussie, Karma, Karma....!!" |

I'm sure I'll come across as something between a Scrooge and a wet blanket, but I'm not a big fan of Karma, Post Counts, Member Since, etc. It seems people use these, in all honesty, meaningless metrics to stratify themselves, form cliques, and build pseudo authority. Trust me, there are many folk on forums who've been members for ever, or have a huge post count, and have no idea what they're talking about. In fact, some of us old-timers are so used to doing things in a certain way that we'll tell new folks "you're doing it wrong," when in fact they're doing it the right "new" way, that we have yet to learn. A couple of systems I've used have had the option for individual members to disable karma. I choose to do so when possible, but that's just my personal preference. |

Well after reading this thread I have to add that I like the karma system - not so much the numbers but maybe that's just because my number is relatively small! What I really do enjoy is reading the comments that I have been left by those who gave me karma. Whether it's to know that someone somewhere enjoyed my feeble attempts at humour or maybe I somehow managed despite my own inexperience to help another newbie with their problem. It's just nice to know that your post was appreciated. |
