With a little luck, he didn't put all 1000 on them at once and can guess from the date the problems started which books may cause this. Then you can delete them, see if it makes a difference and if yes, put them back one by one until you can reproduce the issue.

The same can be done for all 1000 if you don't know. It's a lot of work, but it's probably better than having a non-functioning ebook-reader.

If there is a book that has failed to index, it can be easily located by searching for "xqfvc" or a similar nonsense word. After a minute or two, the unindexed book or books will be listed.

That will tell you the NUMBER of books that are currently unindexed, but it won't tell you WHICH books they are.

If you click on the number line, it lists the books. I've done it a number of times.

It makes it very handy in finding a borked download. Then, you can archive it and try it again.

yup, the reality is probably that when it comes time to replace my kindle 3 a kindle with a touch screen will likely be what is available.

I wouldn't purchase a touch screen kindle. I based my recent purchase of the kindle 3 fully knowing that there's a good chance of the next version being released within the next six months. My reasoning was that there aren't any significant advances in e-ink technology to make a newer purchase imperative. Color e-ink would be nice, but it'd price the next kindle way out of my budget anyway, were it to feature it. Touch screen would be a possible new feature, but I absolutely hate fingerprints and skin oils on the kindle bezel, let alone the actual screen. I'll probably hold on to my kindle 3 for a good couple of years or so, and only look to upgrade when a colour e-ink kindle becomes affordable over time.

Me and my Kindle2 are just chugging along, not giving one damn what's in store for the K4. I Expect my current Kindle to easily outlast it and the next incarnation as well.

Buy book, read words, I'm happy.

Though not a very good improvement for reading books, but it would benefit newspaper & Magazine readers (And maybe web surfing)

Yes, there will be fingerprints. But it takes a while for the fingerprints to get to the point were you'll need to wipe the screen. I find I notice the fingerprints more on a blank screen then a screen with content. And one think that works in Sony's favor is swiping instead of taking to change the page. A tap will show more fingerprints then a swipe.
