I don't like touch screens either. Last thing I want is lots of fingerprints when I'm trying to read.

I guess the other thing they could do is up the resolution of the e-ink Pearl screen. But I am not going to be upgrading until E-Ink comes out with a new screen in 2012.

I'm fine with my reliable ol' Kindle 3 Wifi. I briefly coveted the touchscreen Nook, but I don't care now. I can't see upgrading unless there are some incredible advances. It's not like phone upgrades.

yup, the reality is probably that when it comes time to replace my kindle 3 a kindle with a touch screen will likely be what is available. Last edited by alansplace; 08-11-2011 at 02:22 PM. |

The touch screen technology everyone else is using (Sony, Nook, Kobo) doesn't reduce screen contrast because there's nothing on top of the screen. It uses infrared beams from the bezel surrounding the screen. It does make the screen very slightly more recessed into the bezel, increasing the bezel shadow slightly at the screen edge when the ambient light is coming from the side. It's quite accurate and sensitive - almost on par with the capacitive touch screens on the iPad or iPhone.

Making the processor faster won't increase the screen resolution. The current 6-inch 600 x 800 resolution is the physical resolution of the eInk Pearl display screen. We'll have to wait for eInk to introduce a new screen, which will then presumably start to show up in new models from all the major vendors along with faster processors to handle the extra pixels. (I think iRiver's Google reader has a new 6" 1024 x 768 eInk screen) Last edited by FJames; 08-11-2011 at 05:18 PM. |

I am happy enough with my K3 that I'm considering getting a KSO-WiFi for $114 so I can be sure to coast over the K4 without buying one. If they're going to touchscreens, and color, and lots of games, and web surfing, perhaps I should get two or three.

This is NOT false. I have seen the differences in the nook touch and others have reported the same thing. There have been posts on the nook site commenting on the same thing. Additionally, Amazon has expressed concern with their current touch model about the same thing. There is no point in arguing this, I respect your opinion, however, please don't accuse me of spreading false information when so many others have experienced the exact same thing. |

This is all wrong. IR touch as used by Sony, B&N, & Kobo does not interfere with the screen. IR touch does not lower the contrast. IR touch is quote nice actually. Amazon will be using IR when they go touch and I do feel that enough people will like the touch that Amazon will do away with models that have a physical keyboard.
