Hotel lighting is a whole other story - those 23-watt bulbs are not equivalent to 60 watts by a long shot!

I fly frequently with my K3 and have never had to use its cover light.

Slightly off-topic but DMB do you have to take your Kindle out of your hand luggage for security screening? Flying tomorrow and would like to know what the expect.

It depends on the airport and even the individual terminal. Some demand that you do and some say not to bother. It's a bit like being required to remove shoes (thank you, Richard Reid!). I always ask if they want me to take the reader out of my bag.

I don't ask, if they want me to take it out, they will. And they never have for me.
The rules are specific. Laptops, full size game consoles, full sized DVD players and few other things. I typically travel with a digital projector and every so often they will have me take it out and screen is separately, or just look at it, or swipe it for residue. |

I have never been asked to take my Kindle out. The only time my Kindle was specifically inspected was flying home from New Zealand shortly after the underwear bomber stunt. There was a secondary security screening that required that every person on the plane was pat down and all carry on luggage was hand inspected.
I would remind you to turn off any WiFi or 3G connection and put your Kindle in sleep mode before sending it through the machine. There have been a few reports of people having problems with their Kindles not working after going through the machine and pretty much all of those people reported having left their WiFi or 3G on. |

I have never been asked to take my Sony reader out of my bag. I don't do it and they don't ask.

It also depends on what kind of case it's in. When I flew Detroit > New Haven last spring, they didn't have me take my laptop out of its case (I have just a neoprene sleeve for it), but they did want me to take it out of my carry-on.

There are some cases for laptops that are legal to leave them in. Basically if the laptop can lay on the belt without anything, other than the case, over or below it, it doesn't need to be taken out.

Although I've been asked to take my K3 out of my hand luggage, I've never been asked to open up its case.
