I know this sounds stupid, but did you check the wall socket? There might be an intermittent problem there.

Also, one frequent problem with the USB chargers is not the charger itself but the attached USB cord. Frequent or too severe flexing can break the tiny wires inside the insulation, with the result that the charge will be intermittent or non-existent. Intermittent could be worse, as there is a slight surge each time the wires within the insulation make contact which could potentially harm the reader. It's like repeatedly plugging it in and out of the power source (which is why I always plug the cord into my reader before plugging it into the power source). If you have an extra cord with the proper fittings lying around, you may want to try that first before replacing the charger, although the chargers are fairly cheap.

Just my 2¢.

^Same cord this morning through the computer is working fine. It had the orange light last night too. It wasn't the plug. I'm just not sure why it didn't work. Maybe it wasn't connected quite properly. Enough to light, not enough to charge. Who knows. I'm going to stick with the old 'static electricity' excuse for technology failure.

Gremlins can also cause these problems.

True story: We had an electronics tech where I work who kept a Ouija board and a stake in his arsenal. Whenever he was stumped and the Ouija board didn't help, he'd leave a stake in the defective apparatus for a week or two to drive out the gremlins.

Of course, it was all tongue-in-cheek.

One other possibility is the battery itself. What generation is your Kindle? I know there's a video somewhere that shows how to change the battery on a K2, and it's fairly easy, but you must be sure you fully understand the procedure before you start or you could ruin your Kindle. I don't know if there's a similar video showing how to change the battery on a K3.

K3. It charged today so it's not the USB cable. I'm pretty careful with those. I hate Amazon for making a non-standard USB plug into the Kindle though. Same kind of proprietary nonsense I've hated Sony for for years and it also sucks that I didn't get a wall charger with the Kindle 3 which I won in a contest here in Canada. Can I keep ranting? I've got more.

The Kindle 3 uses the standard Micro USB connector, introduced in 2007. You'll be seeing it in more and more places, as it's also the new standard for charging GSM mobiles.
