Among the Thugs by Bill Buford. It's non-fiction: In the 1980s, an American outsider runs around with English football hooligans and tries to understand what's going on. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion, but pretty good so far.

Dave Barry Does Japan: recommended for anyone who likes to laugh.
I love Dave Barry's books. He writes like I think (and sometimes talk, if I don't filter myself fast enough). I'll have to check this one out!

I recently finished (and reviewed) K. C. May's newest release- "The Wayfarer King." It's a sequel to "The Kinshield Legacy." I really enjoyed it. I credit her for changing my mind about the whole fantasy genre. I didn't think I liked it until I read her first book. Now I'm a changed woman!

Funny you should say that. I had the exact same thought a couple of days ago. Perhaps that's what makes his appeal so universal.

Well, I have a suspicion that I've read it before. Or perhaps I've just heard about it before. Either way, I liked neither the style nor the story nor the lack of plot. I'll leave any further comments to the comment thread.

I like Dave Barry's books as well.

Finished "Dead Man's Rain" by Frank Tuttle. Good ghost story. Enjoyed it thoroughly!

Yeah, I remember that being quite an uncomfortable transition, as well. The good news is that when you are done with the Fionavar Tapestry (while not bad IMO)... you still have GGK's best works to look forward to. Get Ysabel out of the way early, too, if you want to enjoy it at all. Because once you've read The Lions of Al Rassan and Tigana, all his other works simply pale by comparison. It's not that the other works are bad in any way, he's just never come close to matching the excellence of those two works in my eyes. Under Heaven is great, but still a distant third to his masterpieces.

(BTW, there are subtle and overt references to Fionavar in all his other works)

A good short story that tells in a compact space what could have been dragged out into a trilogy. Much, much, better as a short story!

Next: Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages by Diane Duane and Peter Morwood

This has been on my TBR pile since 2008. I really like Diane Duane's other books, so it will be interesting to see what she does with Star Trek TOS.

I've taken a break from what I've been reading to start Slaughterhouse-Five as this month's book club read.

About 25% through and am finding it much more interesting than what I was reading previously. So it goes.

Reading old Agatha Christie books at the moment. I have a complete set in paperback, and I'm reading them in chronological order.

Finished The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. What a wonderful thing. Several of the stories were just brilliant. Amazing.

Now onto the 2nd in the Escape from Furnace series Solitary by Alexander Gordon Smith.
