A visitor at the Kobo GetSatisfaction website mentioned that he had problems with setting up his Kobo account and he determined that it was because his password contained an ampersand. So try changing your password so that it only contains letters and numbers and see whether that works.

Fantastic Joe563, that is exactly what the problem was and in my case I had use the '&' sign in my password. Spoke to two people at Kobo help and none was asking me about the password issue except "are you sure you typed in the correct password"
 I will be a happy beach bum next week. thanks so much.
