You might want to try sending it in to Sony for service. Several people in the Sony section have gotten offers from Sony for a refurbished PRS-650 for $90 since they could not fix (no parts) 505s.

Best of both worlds, a very nice newer reader, no issues with DRM (which is not a huge deal) as it is still a Sony.

And the 650 is head and shoulders over the 600. My wife has my old 600 and she is just waiting for Sony to annouce the new models to see when she will get my 650.

That's an amazing tip, Pinecone. If I owned a 505, I'd pile on the rep immediate mot.

Hope the OP was listening.

To confirm the last point in what's really just a digression: I own a Kindle, a PRS-350 and a PRS-950. Looking at the same images on all three, I did not find any appreciable difference apart from dpi on the 350.

To test the Kindle and the 950, I cut out rectangles in white pieces of cardboard (making sure the rectangles were smaller than the actual screens). Any difference I'd perceived vanished with the cardboard borders placed on both readers.

One could perform the same test using skins with identical designs or colors (though skins allow the edges of the original borders to peek through).

This the best way of doing the test, as some of the comparisons linked seemed to be with a reader having a while bezel and one having a graphite bezel. Which will make it very difficult to actually compare contrast.
