Read the readme that comes with ConvertLIT. It tells you how to extract the key.

JSWolf...I am doing everything properly...its just that it doesn't get me the key... Bob...I have used both the key tool that comes with clit18 and the gui, and even though I believe they are both the same I tried them differently. I thought it would be worthwhile to mention this again, momentarily, before it opens Microsoft Reader, the following message flashes in the key tool: Remote error: Starting address 0000000 and then it goes away and opens Microsoft Reader (with the previous dialogue of a now grey "Get key" and "Change" file, and the "Exit" button) Thanks for your help, your time is truly appreciated. Have you tried clit1.5? I haven't tried looking for an extra hook.dll, but what works for me is using command line clit1.5 to downconvert the lit files, then the 1.8 gui to extract them. Tedious but effective.

Well, my problem isn't with the extraction itself, its just getting the key from the DRM5 protected files...

I can't get the key either, that's why I do what I do.

What you need to do is download ConvertLIT 1.5, replace the 1.8 "clit.exe" with the same file from 1.5, then run the key recovery tool; it should now work. Once you have your "key.txt" file, replace the 1.5 file with the 1.8 one again to do your actual conversions.

Maybe I'll get around to firing up the laptop and trying it on there. It has XP Pro and if I can remember my passport info, I can activate MS Reader and try it.

Does anyone know... is ConvertLIT a windows only thing? I think someone has said they can't download LIT files from a non-MS machine. Is this true? Potential switchers want to know. BOb |

In order to download MS Reader eBooks, you need a Windows machine with Internet Explorer and an activated copy of MS Reader. I think there is a version of Convert lit compiled for Linux. But you do need a Windows box to purchase DRM laden MS Reader eBooks.

ConvertLIT basically converts to html format books, which can then be converted with things such as the libprs500 tools.
