The kindle battery seems to last long enough and it seems to refresh each page.

I was surprised when I got my son his Kobo and at first saw all the ghosting since I knew it was using the same screen as the Sony. I then realized that it was refreshing every 6 pages and found the option to change it. After being used to my Sony refreshing each page, the font just looked so dull after 6 pages. It looks and works great now after changing the options. My son does not notice the flash and either do I when you are using touch to change pages, it is just not nearly as noticeable as with buttons alone.

Yes, the partial refresh thing is a really bizzare hack... it was added to kobo post release, I think in an attempt to feature parity with the Nook, (which was the device that introduced the idea of using only partial refresh for the page turns)... It's great for people who were annoyed by the black flash, but I can't for the life of me immagine why it was left with the poor quality rendering as the defauld setting.

I didn't have a problem with the default refresh rate of the Kobo Touch until I went to read it outside. Then it was VERY noticeable. Borderline unreadable on the last page before the refresh. Tweaking it down to three fixed that problem. |

Hm, I don't see the ghosting as a big problem at all, so I've left it at 6. I can still read everything just fine, and the ghosted text is rather indistinct. I consider it not much worse than seeing letters through thin paper in an ordinary book, and that never was an issue to me.

The ghosting is not the only problem with partial refresh. The font aliasing is much roughter looking on paritial refresh.. the screen just doesn't seem to be able to calculate the 'grey' levels well when chaning pixels from varying states. Refreshing every page noticeably sharpens the text and reduces aliasing artifacts.

I only notice the problem when I'm reading outside. But it's not serious enough for me to bother changing settings. When reading at home under relatively low light levels I don't even notice it. I suspect this is a matter of vision and personal tastes.
