I purchased my ebookwise 1150 in 2005, and then later my Palm TX in 2006 - quite some time before Kindle appeared in late 2007.

What about the Franklin Ebookman? I used to use one of them and it was strictly for reading ebooks or at least there weren't many apps available for it that I could find. Mobipocket stopped supporting it and books past a certain point therefore couldn't be read on it but it existed long before the Kindle. Of course it use a different display and was a battery hog (4hrs charge tops) but it was a dedicated ebook reader. (1999-2002)

No it wasn't. It was preceded by the Sony Librie, which was only sold in Japan.

Well in that case the first computer should be classified as the first ebook reader since one could read ebooks on it.

Just used for reading <> dedicated reader

That's like saying your oven is a dedicated pizza baker, because all you buy are frozen pizzas.

AGAIN you are straying away from the original topic. If Joe's Palm is used for reading 90% of the time, then it is a dedicated reader. According to your definition my Cruz Reader cannot be a dedicated reader because it can be used to surf the web. The iPod Touch cannot be a dedicated reader either.

Now, if you want to discount all of that, crich70's statement about the Franklin looks like the winner.

I would submit that the Cruz and Touch are, definitely NOT, dedicated readers. The age of dedicated ereaders is dead.

The age of "dedicated" ereaders never really dawned. The first device to convert readers en masse did so partly with basic browsing and email over free 3G as a hook. There are multiples more ereaders out there with additional capabilities than without.

Let me rephrase then......the first computer that could display text on a screen. If it could do that, you could read books on it and therefore it should be considered the first ereader if we aren't talking about "dedicated" ereaders.

Cheers,
