I have to admit that while the 950 is the only current Sony I might consider buying (mostly because of the 2 column landscape mode), in *this* context, the 950 never crossed my mind as a viable option.

Not looking to be offensive, but without a PC to feed the reader, the prospective user would be buying lock, stock, and barrel into the reader's branded ebookstore and ecosystem. And on those terms, Sony just isn't competitive.

Lock-in to Amazon or B&N is tolerable (and Kindle's browser allowing 3g access to non-Amazon sites and bookstores means Amazon lock-in isn't total), lock-in to Sony isn't.

The gadget-buying public at-large doesn't much care, though, whether it be gaming consoles, media players, or ebook readers.

It may grate but that's how they vote their wallets.
