I really don't know anything about ivy other than the Ivy covered walls of my old university. Does it really cause damage to the walls after a while? What about those old, old ivy covered cottages we see in pictures? Will this eventually cause the wall to crumble? Even stone walls?

Many people told me the plant clinging to walls is not good, that is if the wall is thin (10-15cm). Its roots "puncture" the wall. I figure that the cement or something constructing the wall is destroyed by the humidity. If the walls are thick then it's okay? Universities and old houses have extrememly thick walls so it must be alright.

By the way... anyone knows the name of the plant by the back of this pict, clinging to the wall, with small leaves?

I think I'll keep his name a secret for a while longer. He's just someone I met, we had a pretty awesome first date, but it's not 'official' yet. But don't worry, you'll know in time

Ivy will damage buildings, as it will grow into gaps, continue to expand as it grows, and force apart the gaps it grows through. On old walls it might well grow into or onto the mortar between the bricks, and cling so tightly that removing the ivy also removes the mortar.

But in this case the ivy and the wall are both so old that I think the ivy is adding structural strength to the wall, such that even removing it without further damaging the wall might lead to collapse. It would need doing in sections with re-pointing as you go to fix it. And then there's the couple of bulgin sections from trees growing too close to it on my neighbours side....

So I've just hacked it back so that it no longer obstructs the path, and that'll do for another few years.

Just finished Coke Zero #3. Moving onto Coke Zero #4...

All my bags are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin' it's early morn
The taxi's waitin' he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Good morning, everyone! Seems as though I wake up with this song often. Maybe I should stay home more....... Nah...
So I'll start today with a big BIG mug of East India Company's "Royal Breakfast" tea, a big bowl of miso soup, rice with daikon tsukemono! I doubt anyone will have even heard of daikon tsukemono when I order breakfast tomorrow!

I've already put 30 big home-made tea bags into my travel tin, so that's ready. All the 'hard' stuff is packed (wedding presents, camera gear, toys, etc). Just have to add some clothing and shut the case. This time I got smart... I bought a roll of 'bubble wrap' plastic to fill up the case. Only half the suitcase will be filled with my stuff when it's all in there. I'll buy a dozen pairs of socks and underwear there, so only need to bring two pair with me. Same with shirts and pants. So I need to somehow 'pack' the suitcase tightly so thing don't shift around and break in transit. Plastic Bubble wrap is ideal. There is no weight, plenty of cushioning, and cheap. I can use it on the other end to protect things for the return trip, and just throw away what I don't need!

I'm taking an over-sized suitcase with me as I'll be bringing back a LOT of things that I ordered and had shipped to my US mailbox; everything from a crockpot and "WhirlyPop" popcorn maker to a half dozen new pants, shorts, etc. and of course I'll be shopping like a mad man while I'm there (In US sizes I take a Lg. In Japanese sizes I need a 3L or 4L if I can find it!) so I need a really big suitcase to get home. Things are a LOT cheaper in the US too... In Japan 10 Tylenol capsules cost about $5 USD. In Walmart I can buy a bottle of 250 generic for $3. Guess which I prefer...

It used to be that we'd just buy a cheap expanding duffle at our destinations to deal with these things, but these days the airlines are not only charging overweight fees, but 'per bag' fees too, so a single big case comes out a lot cheaper!

I had to look up his name... He's young enough to be my son. I guess he must have heard that from me!

I'm going to have one more mug of tea, then go for a bike ride to pass the day. I hate waiting around to leave!
