I used to play it safe and wait 48 hours, but lately 24 hours has been fine.

At my library it seems to be under 24 hours no matter how many you return at a time. What bugs me is sometimes I download a book thinking "that looks good", then when I have a flip through I realise it's not for me, yet have to keep it for 24 hours and remember to return it just so I don't get locked out.

I think Overdrive is a bit sensitive on this tbh.

I'm wondering if this is why they're rolling out the "SAMPLE" option on ebooks. To avoid "just to try it out" downloads, maybe?

But I agree. Once again, the presumption is always - they're a pirate!

I've been locked out twice. Since the lockouts covered all 3 libraries I was using, I assumed it might have been because I returned a group of books which had been downloaded from different libraries all at once, perhaps in combination with one of more minimum times set by each library. But maybe it is as simple as just the time of retention per book before return for each book. I've noticed that 24 hours plus is safe for each of the libraries I use, but I also now only borrow one set from one library at a time, then return all members of that set before borrowing another set from another library.

I am a member of 4 Overdrive libraries and when I managed to lock myself out it was only from the one library. There was no effect on the other accounts at all.

My experience was extremely frustrating as I accidently returned a book I had only just borrowed. A simple (but silly!) mistake with a click in the wrong place. I have no idea why I did it!
Not only did I lose that book which had been on hold for weeks but I was locked out for nearly 48 hours and very nearly missed another hold book which became available during my punishment time.

I learnt my lesson and I am now very careful when returning my books.

I think the multiple account lock outs depends on how the system is set up. I am a member of two libraries that have joined together (books from both show up on the internal library system, as do both cards on one account) and offer overdrive together. When I was locked out on one I was locked out on the other. However, another library I am a member of, not linked to the first two, was fine during the lock out.

Regardless, from what I can tell I don't believe it is the number of books you return at once (like 8 in one day). It seems to be more of a very short check out time for one book ... like under 5 minutes or so.
It is short check out time. I returned a book after a 1 day checkout and I got locked out. Apparently they don't believe that anyone can read that fast.

Or that patrons won't sometimes open a book, start it, and soon realize they can't get into it.

One might also wonder if they are preparing for if and when the major publishers start making them rebuy the books after a certain number of downloads. If you have to repurchase after 26 downloads, you would certainly prefer the borrower to have read the book.

@Tome Keeper, Were you using the same Adobe ID when trying to download from the two libraries that were locked out as you were with the one that wasn't locked out? I ask because I've wondered if this lockout is an OverDrive thing or a Adobe thing.

Yes, I only use 1 Adobe ID for all my accounts.

In my experience (YMMV), the limit is 3 times the maximum out at one time, and it's enforced for the patron's chosen checkout duration.

For example, if a library allows 5 books out at one time, and you check out your first book January 1 at noon, the error occurs if you try to check out a 16th book before January 8 at noon (if your loans are set for a week at a time).

I'd been ignoring the loan duration settings, leaving them at default. I'll have to check and reduce them next time I'm on. I'm not sure all libraries give patrons the option.
