Can the Kindle 3 3G used in Canada for Gmail etc? or is it limited to Wiki plus amazon shopping?

I had kindle 1, 2 and now 3. My k3 is Wi-fi only, and I don't miss 3G at all. There is wi-fi in my home, hotels, airports, coffee shops. I usually HAVE to download a book at 2 am, not while I am on the train.

Absolutely. It's awesome. I don't have to think of where I can get WiFi internationally now. I just open up my Kindle.

Funny thing. I actually check gmail while on a bus in Brazil.
And there's always a connection if you're in a city.
I once went on a farm and was able to get good signal on my K3.

This one time, I was trapped in a bookstore with nothing to read. After I broke out, I would have had to wait for the entire 15 minute drive home before I could get a new book on my Kindle... but free 3G really saved my bacon that day.

Actually, I believe I used the 3G on mine immediately after I got it—just to verify everything worked as advertised—and haven't used it since (and I don't have Wifi on mine either).

Thats the coverage map.
Thanks for the link to the coverage map!

The map showed Kazahkstan with very little 3G coverage.

Here's where that extra $50 was worth it for me:
I was in the Kona airport in Hawaii when the Japan earthquake hit. Information was trickling in--someone said it was a 7.5, which shouldn't be a big deal for Japan, but then it became apparent that it was much more major. That's when I started freaking out. Luckily, I was able to load Facebook and see that my friend in Tokyo was okay.

Even in less dire situations, it's been great. Everywhere I've tried to use it, I get some sort of cellular data connection. I live in Chile, so that's saying something

Where do you get that 25 USD difference from?

For me, if I compare the Kindle 3 wifi versus wifi+3G shipped to Denmark including taxes the difference is 65 USD. (1085 DKK vs. 1425 DKK -> diff. is 340 DKK ~ 65 USD)
Maybe it's for the Kindles with adverts? I don't think they are available outside US. Another thing to take into account.

With a difference if 65 USD and only access to Wikipedia and Amazon's bookshop, I think it's fairly safe to say that the 3G functionality is not very useful to me
But don't mind me - I'm just pissed off at travfar's condescending tone (post #24) when he doesn't know what he's talking about

Yeah, my statement was based on the two Special Offer models.

I just got the Kindle 3G with special offers yesterday. Is it just me or is it really difficult to navigate with the built-in internet browser? Zooming in and out was no problem, but the response was slow... almost like a 1980 PC. I guess I should treat it as an emergency back-up internet device?

The Kindle has an extremely slow, ultra low-power, CPU. It's certainly no speed demon .

I have only used it a couple of times but I can use it for my e-mail. Very slow and pokey but does work. I only used it as I had no Wi-fi connection at the time.

I bought a 3G one for my folks as they had no access to wifi at the time. They've since gotten a router, which doesn't really play nice with the Kindle. If 3G is slower, my mom will just have to wait an extra couple of seconds for each sodoku entry to take.
