Where can I buy Non-DRM books?
More and more I'm steering towards buying
only Non-DRM books so I can archive them locally and not depend on Amazon to keep them. I have gotten some books from Smashwords, but many titles are not available through them. Who else sells Non-DRM books that has more of the main stream books. I understand I can get an app to convert them, but I'd rather just get it Non-DRM from the start. Thank you |

You won't get DRM-free books from the mainstream publishers; it tends to only be the small publishing houses and independent authors who produce them. It's VERY easy, though, to remove DRM should you wish to do so: do a Google search for "Apprentice Alf".

I have toyed with Apprentice Alf tools but from what I am reading it look as if they are going to be making things harder to remove the DRM. Hence why I'd rather just get them that way to begin with. Hopefully more books will become available Non-DRM from the start. |

I was all ready to help you until you said "mainstream"
I've bought more books than I can count from Baen, they have very liberal policies: ebooks with no DRM, and even a nicely stocked online library of free books. Jim Baen was smart enough to know that if you give someone the first book of a series for free, you'll be back to buy the rest. If you like Science Fiction and Fantasy, or are willing to try it, I strongly suggest you go to http://www.webscription.net/ right now. |

Awesome!! My top picks are:
Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion (fantasy), my favorite book ever. The first book in the trilogy, Sheepfarmer's Daughter, is in the free library. David Weber's Honor Harrington series (military sci fi), the first two are in the free library. On Basilisk Station Sharon Lee & Steve Miller's Liaden Universe books (space opera? not sure how to categorize them). None of them are free, but IMHO they're worth at least twice what the various books cost at Baen. I started with Conflict of Honors, but Local Custom is first chronologically in the regular series, or you could start with the Crystal Soldier & Crystal Dragon prequels. More info on the series is here. Last edited by PocketGoddess; 07-27-2011 at 11:54 AM. |

Be aware that many more of Baen's books are available free, legally from http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/, which are copies of the CDs that Baen has distributed free with some of their hardbacks.
Edited to add: I've been seeing more and more books at Amazon without DRM. Keep your eyes open for "Device Usage: Unlimited" on the book page. That means no DRM. |

Yes, that's true. For example, all of the releases from Twilight Times Books are DRM-free, both at Amazon and anywhere else you find them.

Also, for non-DRM, but mostly non-SF try http://www.bewrite.net.
For DRM-free of all kinds, start here: http://drmfree.calibre-ebook.com/ |
