New touch owner here.

Is there a way to direct the install to a drive other than the boot drive? I use an ssd for a boot drive and prefer to at least have an option where I put programs.

I would like to avoid fiddling with the registry.

Is this program even necessary? Can I get by using a wifi connection for updates and Calibre to sideload books?

The install process does not have an option to change the install location. However, the Desktop Application is only needed to set up your Touch and to load an initial firmware update. Thereafter, you can use the Wi-Fi to buy books and get firmware updates so you could probably uninstall the application.
