new PRS650 - no display when charging

Hi everyone! Please someone help... After some research I finally decided to get a new sony PRS-650, because it seemed to be the best choice... I am really sad, because I put it to charge, on the computer usb, the red light comes on but there is no display at all! In the start guide it says that it could take around 5 minutes, but I have been waiting for more than 2 hours now. The red line is still on, but no display and no reaction of the computer if I plug/unplug the usb. I have tried in different computers now, and it is the same. I also tried to restart the computer with the ebook connected, and nothing. Did this happen to anyone? any suggestion? or do you think it is broken? I didn't buy it in Potugal, so hope there's something to do not involving sending it back to France Ana |

First question that comes to mind is are you using the ORIGINAL cable that comes with the 650? I have both the 650 and 950 in my house and the 950 does NOT work with the 650 USB cable. However the reverse does work. Go figure. I would suggest trying another cable. The socket is a standard micro USB cable. If this does not work, do you have a USB wall charger that you can try? There are threads here that tell if certain ones worl or not with the 650. Good luck! |

Hi. Yes, I am using the original cable... I will get a PSP charger tomorrow morning to see if it works, that's what some people suggest, but not exactly for the same problem as mine. I only have an ipod one that doesn't seem to to be a option. hope it works! thanks for your reply. |

You should also try resetting the unit. Have a look at page 96 of the user's manual.

I tried reseting and nothing happened. Left the ebook connected to the laptop all night (without suspending)... Will get the blackberry wall charger now. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you. Ana |

Actually I prefer teh iGo chargers (www.igo.com) That way you can have one charger for all your small electronic devices.

I have had similiar problems with my PRS -600 Sometimes you have to restart several times. Once I had to do a hard reset, although it did not erase my books it might with yours Hard Reset (PRS-350/650/950) WARNING: A HARD RESET WILL ERASE ALL CONTENT ON THE READER. 1. Sounds like a fault with your unit or with its USB cable if you are using the charger that came in the box. Return the unit for a replacement and if that has the same problem, get your money back! You shouldn't have to be frequently hard setting or buying chargers for a brand new unit to make it work.

Make sure you have a good USB port as well. I know if I used the hub on my old computer, it sometimes would not work but if I went directly into the computer it worked fine. My guess is if you are using your laptop this should not be a problem, just thought I would mention it. I have an iGo charger as well and really like it. It is especially nice too if I am nursing and reading and realize it is time to charge and not sure if I am going to have enough juice, I can just grab the charger and it will charge while am reading and doesn't even need to be plugged in to the wall. Pretty nice. Jodi |
