Is that the same 'Topper' that was a TV show in the 50's? Cosmo Topper? Stitchawl |

The book was a bit more risqué. The ghost couple were a riot. George Kerby was jealous because his wife Marion kept trying to put the moves on Topper. He didn't accept her excuse that she was free to fool around because the marriage vows only extended "until death do you part." Of course, that doesn't explain why she felt Cosmo Topper was fair game, since he was married, and both he and his wife were very much alive.

I like 'em all. The tv show must have been syndicated when I was a kid; I'm surprised at how clear a memory of it I have, even down the ghost dog, Neal, making slurping noises. I suspect the show would seem dated today, but the movie is as sparkling as it was in 1937. And I'm blown away by the prose of the book, so fresh and witty and surprisingly ribald, given its time. Ageless. |

Was it in Topper where I ran across the phrase "step-ins" for more delicate undergarments (as opposed to capacious bloomers)? If you folks enjoy Topper, look into Manning Coles' series of three books: Brief Candles, Happy Returns and Come and Go -- two deceased cousins and their (also deceased) pet monkey to the rescue! |

Finished Hunter's Run by George R.R. Martin, Gardner Dozois and Daniel Abraham this evening. Part of the "Big Deal" sale going on currently. I like SF Signal's brief synopsis: An angry prospector is forced by aliens to hunt someone down. This is one of the most interesting story lines I've read in SF in a long time. The protagonist is not someone I'd like my daughter dating (if I had a daughter). Ramon drinks too much, has a terrible temper and manages to kill a government Ambassador at the beginning of the tale and decides to head into the wilderness to escape. Before the end, we have "The Defiant Ones" with an alien tied to Ramon, a duplicate Ramon, a desperate race to return to civilization and an ending that I still don't completely understand. And I still enjoyed the heck out it. 4 of 5 stars. |

Er, I must've been too easy-going there at the time. Just corrected it, 4/5 not 5/5 any more since the hero-saves-the-day motif is predictable. My review was short 'cause I was lazy. MHI is definitely readable and an easy book to pick up when you have free time for something light, just to cool off. No serious stuff, no philosophy, no big thinking. That's good enough for me. Marvel should make a movie out of this series LOL Quote:
Why does everyone think I'm a he? On topic: I'm reading MHV now. Looks promising

Next up: Grantville Gazette #29 edited by Paula Goodlett. A long-running series of ebook-only anthologies of short stories based in the 1632 universe created by Eric Flint. I've read the first 28, but I'm a bit behind now. The last edition was #36! In general, these stories only work if you've read the main line books. They're also dotted about the time-line, so you need to be pretty familiar with the series to make any sense of them. Great fun for those who really like the 1632 stuff.

Space Viking by H. Beam Piper. I believe I'm due for another Travis McGee novel next, or perhaps some Turtledove.

Just finished Left Hand of God by Paul Hoffman. It's a fantasy novel that's quite dark. My main gripe with it is that he has a tendency to use countries, regionsetc. from the real world and mesh that into his fantasy world. Also the thinly veiled distortion of the Catholic/Christian faith was a bit much. |
