Another change of pace before I plunge back into the "Young Wizards" Universe: The Listerdale Mystery by Agatha Christie Her 22nd book. I'm over a quarter of the way through her books now. |

I've been on a late 19th century/early 20th century "adventure, romance, lost world, buckle my swash" romp for the last month or so that included authors like H. Rider Haggard (Thanks HarryT!), Anthony Hope, Rafael Sabatini, and Stanley J. Weyman. I enjoyed them all immensely. Some I've had "on the shelf", but many came from the library right here at MR. Thanks to all who contribute.
![]() As much as I enjoyed my short "time capsule," I'm ready for something a little more contemporary. I'm giving fantasy newcomer Bradley P. Beaulieu's The Winds of Khalakovo a try. I've read a few short stories by him that I really enjoyed, and I'm hoping that talent scales to novel proportions. |

Just finished A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard. Very moving book and a horrifying story, but I'm glad I read it. Really got me thinking about some essential things in life!
My next book will be Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Looking forward to it! I guess I'm in a non-fiction mood now... which I'm most of the time. |

I've finished Wicked in anticipation of next week's discussion and I loved it. I'll keep my comments to a minimum until then, but I'll mention that I enjoyed how Maguire synthesized the book and the movie as background material. I reread The Wonderful Wizard of Oz first and I think now I'll get in The Marvelous Land of Oz (which I've never read), expecting to meet a few more of the characters from Wicked.
Among other books, I'm currently reading the scathingly funny Topper by Thorne Smith, downloaded from MR. I'm trying to stretch it out even though I can look forward to the sequel. A synchronicity: I looked up the film Topper, and see that Billie Burke appeared in it as Mrs. Topper. Her best known role, of course, is as Glinda. And an interesting sidenote: Stephen Sondheim had a writing credit on the tv show Topper. Last edited by issybird; 07-25-2011 at 02:17 PM. |

I thought I already posted this but apparently not. I finished American Gods, and have to give a big thanks to whoever told me to stick with it. I ended up really enjoying the book. I don't know if the extra 12,000 words in the anniversary edition made the difference this time or not.
Jim Butcher's Ghost Story should download sometime after midnight. So I may not get much sleep tonight. |
