Not at all all you guys qoute is screen resolution it has nothing to do with cover size in any way or form, well it does and doesnt. In this case it has no bearing on what I am asking. ACtually the only one who seems to know what he is talking about is theducks.

Any size of graphic OTHER than the native dimensions of the device will require scaling, interpolation or other similar techniques to be used.

YOUR creating or massaging a cover to the devices native resolution will ensure that no additional resizing IS required

the covers i am using are aprox 417pixels width and 686 hih 300x300 dpi... all go over just dont show up in the touch as a cover and after calibre transfer it then shows as blank.
Manual edit of the style sheet is one way.
another is on the Output options if you DON'T use the "No SVG cover" option.
Then you can tick the "maintain Aspect Ratio" box

Ok, So i have tried the no svg cover option. And that gives me mixed results wtih calibre its hit and miss. An interesting thing to point out is If i dump the reader and reset it. And it does it thing processing content for over 45 mins all my covers show up. It seems the problem with the covers showing or not showing up is directly related to the use of Calibre. Now that said, I have tried all that you have suggested and the result is the same... no covers.. and thats after deleting them and turing the reader off and then on.. to make sure that content is gone.. then placing the newly constructed epub.
Now you mention manually editing the the style sheet.. Ok whats that and how is that done?

When you convert a book using calibre it resizes the cover image per the device selected and inserts it into the book. What device do you have set for the output profile?

Walt I have the kobo selected, I have also tried generic Verison as well. Its itneresting to note that if I reset the Kobo to factory the books that were pushed to the sd card from calibre will be reprocessed and volia the covers show.... I am still angling along the lines that Calibre is at fault here. All the books show up wtih covers corectly in for instance Stanza.

Theducks, So "CSS" what is that and where exactly does it controll the cover sizing.... I do have kobo selected but to be fair i have tried it all over and over again. dif formats etc. Like I said if i factory reset the kobo... and let it process the content again it all shows up nice covers and all. Untill i connect Calibre and then the covers stop showing up after processing content.

The CSS is part of the EPUB Book (use the Tweak function to explode the book and look for the CSS file(s) that can be opened with Notepad or any non-word processing editor.

From there on, it is SIMPLE reverse engineering

Find the place that uses the image: Note the class= name associated.
find those same names in the CSS. That affects the image.

w3c.org has XHTML and CSS reference documentation

I don't have a Kobo, when you say covers don't show up are you referring to the thumb nail images of the book cover or the book cover when the book is opened? These are very different complaints.

Thank you. I will look at that shortly.Ok here is what is happening now.
I have factory reset the Kobo... Waited out the prcoessing content its a long wait btw because of the number of books. The books that were pushed wtih calibre to the sd card are there.. but now that Calibre is not communicating wiht the kobo All the covers are showing up. This is a strong indication that calibre is corrupting the meta data somewhere along the line. I think I will use Calibre to manage my books but not to manage the Reader.

Here are a three different things you might want to try one at a time to see if they have any affect.
  1. Under Preferences - Sending books to device - change metadata management to Manual Management.
  2. Go to Preferences - Plugins - Device interface plugins - Kobo plugin and see if unchecking Read metadata from files on device makes a difference.
  3. Disable the Kobo device interface plugin and use the Connect to Folder feature to transfer your files to the Kobo.
Good Luck.
