No you're not. You're paying for the disk and for a license to watch the content privately. The disk can not be (easily, legally) copied to be watched in more than one place at a time.

There ABSOLUTELY is a difference between physical and digital Copyright law, or else there never would have been a Digital Millennium COPYRIGHT Act to address those difference.

The main (and I think obvious) difference is that physical media is controlled by it's physicality. It's only in one place at a time, so simply saying "you're not allowed to make or distribute copies" is often adequate. The physicality imparted certain limitations that didn't need to be specifically readdressed in copyright law. With digital material, by it's very nature, ANY use --- any download, any transfer -- is inherently a duplication, so it is totally reasonable that the law needs to concern it self with more detailed control of those abilities. Again, I see this as obvious. If you think you should able to resell the LICENSE you have to ebook content, great. I agree. But it has nothing to do with being able to resell a DVD or a paperback or a car. It has to do with us believing that is fair use and value we want, and we want the rules changed to account for it.

ApK -- I get what you're saying, but in that case, I agree with whomever it was that said some rewording is needed from Amazon and other sellers.

Instead of sending me an email 'regarding my recent purchase of A Dance with Dragons', they should really be saying, "regarding your recent rental...".

Right? I'm so confused LOL!

No it's not rental. It's buying a specific and different kind of license.

Don't get hung up on the trying to shoehorn the way words are used for one thing to a totally different arena. Don't BUY into that confusion! Note the totally different but equally legitimate use of the word BUY there....

ApK - thanks for the explanation. I'm not really all that incensed...my main worry in reading the OP's post and the rest of the thread is that I'll perhaps no longer be able to use ebooks purchased from Amazon on my Nook. And even that isn't an 'omg-it's-the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it' moment for me. If it happens, it just means that Amazon will have lost a customer and I doubt they'll even know or care.

BTW...something I've been curious about is the library books for Kindle users. What format will they be in? Are they available yet? Anyone know?

It's not a lie exactly, they do get involved in CRIMINAL copyright infringement as the warning says...they just don't seem to mention that personal copying has nothing to do with that, and it would take some rather extraordinary revenue-generating pirate activity to get into the criminal area....how about we call it FUD and intimidation rather than a lie.

Of course I am! The DVD warnings make it clear that no 'copying' is allowed even for home use. I can't remember the exact wording, but essentially they're saying that even if you don't want to profit from the copies, making backups of purchased DVDs for personal use is also illegal. I'm guilty. I not only make backups, I'll occasionally convert the ripped files to play on my ereader. Really great for long plane trips.
