Update: Working - not working?

I had opened the zip file on my PC and saw that the file inside was
update.zip.out
I retrieved another version from a different thread and opened it and found several zip files among other things inside.
I placed this different version on my USB stick, started my PE and the update loaded just fine.
I am still indebted to the many helpful suggestions I have found on this forum in all of the threads. I will try to root this thing so I can get to the android market. Thanks to all of you for sharing your results (especially after the many trials you may have endured).

I was having the same loop problem. I tried everything with my USB stick (checking the extension, switching from FAT to FAT32, etc). Then I used a micro SD and it worked right away.

I'm glad to say I finally got the update to 2.2! Yeah! Thanks for all the suggestions. A couple of things I did was check to make sure I had the correct update.zip file for the pe. Check to make sure I renamed the file properly. And I used an older USB flash drive I had since 2004. When I woke up this morning. My screen was frozen on the 4 dots on one side and initializing on the other. I could not turn it off. I removed the USB flash drive and got a pin and did a manual reset. After I started back up I did not recognize the screen. There was a sliding speaker icon on the right bottom and a sliding lock icon on the left bottom. After sliding the lock, i got the desktop. I check the software version. I had 2.2 Thanks again for all the help!!!!!

Interesting - when I finally got a USB drive to work, it also was an older one that I'd had around for a few years. Maybe that's a clue ...

There appears to be a certain amount of MIS-information on this thread regarding Windows and what it displays for file extensions (.zip, .doc...etc).
It depends upon your Windows settings.
Open a folder on the PC, Got to "Tools" - then to "Folder Options" - then to "View"; in the "Files and Folders" section, just below the "Hidden Files and Folders" icon (I'm on Xp) there is a button "Hide extensions for known file types". If it is CHECKED then Windows will NOT show extensions such as .zip, .doc... (i.e. the KNOWN extensions). If you REALLY want to know the FULL filename then UN-check the box and then check the file name.
In the current case (Update PE to Ermine) when you plug your USB drive into the PC you should have file "update.zip" (WITHOUT any other extensions, garbage...etc) in the ROOT directory of the USB drive.
Plug the USB drive into the PE and follow the instructions already given multiple time to update to Ermine. It's that simple, and IT WORKS.

On Vista, I was stumped at this one.....but, finally found it in the control panel, under "folder options"..... for sharing....this will be helpful for all sorts other applications--wish I had discovered it earlier!!
