If the kind doesn't believe anything the adviser says, then shouldn't he just say "everything you believe is wrong" and watch his head explode. Problem solved.

That's the logic, actually. He says "I lied to you yesterday", and because His Highness doesn't believe him, that would be equivalent to "I told you the truth yesterday"

That's the adviser telling stuff about himself which won't convince the king, even if it is the truth. Bear in mind the king is dead set on not believing the adviser so the latter needs to say something the king can't refute but, at the same time, avoid drawing his wrath.

There is one solid truth in this whole tit for tat... (There! A definite clue!)
