Amazon is not a publisher!!! People can publish their work through Amazon but they are their own publisher, Amazon is a retailer. Gollancz/Orion is a publisher and the titles are all from their own back catalogue that they have either in print or previously had in print but currently unavailable... this kind of thing is what many people have been complaining that publishers don't do so now we have one doing it and what happens? It gets written off in relation to a retailer!!! If you want to use that argument then most SF & Fantasy collectors have bigger libraries but , just like Amazon, we're not publishers!!!

Plus, I'm pretty sure that Amazon doesn't consider themselves an SFF library (nor does anybody else) . Perhaps Gollancz should have said "the launch of the world’s largest digital, exclusively SFF library." That may have assuaged the nitpickers.

Probably not, though.

I figure Webscriptions has about 1200 ebooks now, with over 1000 from Baen alone. However, Baen's not likely to increase their ebook offerings to 3-5 thousand in 1-2 years. I'll be disappointed if they don't get digital rights for the entire world, or price them all in the $10-15 range.

It doesn't matter whether Amazon is a publisher. And no one is complaining about this development. But the PR statement:

Of course Amazon is not an SFF seller, it is selling all genres under the Amazon name so isn't an SFF Library like the SF Gateway but have the nitpick your way... you obviously know better...

Amazon sells anything, Sturgeon's law to the extreme, one feature people hope for with the Gollancz is quality (and of course universal availability).

Basically a 'library' with selected good works with a good central interface beats the hell out of a warehouse that contains everything, perhaps buried under a complete mess.

Gollancz is lying. They claim to have the largest SFF library and they don't. They don't claim to have the largest SFF libary *for a publisher.* They don't claim to have the largest SFF library among libraries that don't sell other genres.

They are just being dishonest. I don't like dishonesty. You can call that "nitpicking" if you want.

I do and I did... congrats, get life and look at something important when spraying "Ooooh, it's dishonest" about when a) you're wrong, and b) there's real dishonesty going on in the world for you to hold up your noble outrage to...
