LCD screen.
Focused on a proprietary format while ignoring epub (byebye, Kindle). Not available in my country. |

I've got my preferences, but I don't think there's really anything that would make me outright reject a reader. In general, I'm not a fan of:
-Touch screens. Not so much because I fear fingerprints but because I dislike the texture of the e-ink screen. It's a tactile thing for me. -Too many steps for writing annotations and notes. My first choice is to have a physical keyboard ready and waiting, but if a touch screen is the only option, I'd want one that brings up a virtual keyboard in a single step. -Requires a computer to download books. I want WiFi at a minimum, but 3G is even better. Bonus points if it has a browser; I like being able to look things up on wikipedia. -LCD screen on a dedicated reader. I don't mind reading ebooks between rounds of Angry Birds, but for sustained reading, e-ink is where it's at! -Crappy battery-life (see LCD screen) |

Killer for me
The killer items for me are that the reader is a pain to use and load books and the company has poor customer service.
I'll admit that I do not own a dedicated ebook reader. I read on my phone and PC or laptop. I have been reading on PDAs and phones since Peanut Press and the Palm 3 (or was it Palm III?). I have used just about all of the reader software, for PDAs, phones and PCs. My present Android phone has Kindle, Nook, KOBO, FBReader and a couple of others on it, so I am able to compare each one for loading books and reading books. I can also compare touch screen and buttons since I have used both on various PDAs & phones. Personally, I don't see any difference in ease of use between buttons & touch. Touch is new and sexy, but I went from a Moto Q9h to an Android touch phone (Moto Bravo) and neither one seemed easier or harder to use than the other. The best for typing input was the Moto Q9h phone with its keyboard. Don't mention Swype; I tried it and couldn't stop missing letters. I did like the original Palm Grafiti input. As for buying a book and starting to read, it's Amazon's Kindle for Android hands down, in my opinion. One click, they say, and you are reading, but it's really 2 since you need to say which Kindle item the book goes to. |

Ebook readers that cater to only one store, that I am unable to buy from them. That's the only thing that would prevent me from buying a particular e-reader, because I can't be reading public domain books all the time. Other than that, I'm pretty easy going when it comes to e-readers.

The deal-killers for me are 1.) not having a backlight and 2.) mandatory DRM- if I can't read the content I already have on it, there's no point in buying it. Everything else is negotiable.

Poor battery life.
Also: Not touchscreen. Physical keyboard. Can't check my email and read blog posts. No wireless downloads for books. |

Backlight. Forgot backlight. I do most of my reading in poor lighting conditions, especially reading in bed after my wife has gone to sleep.
