As long as auto-update is off, I don't have to learn something new, right?
![]() Alternatively, it sounds like the USB connection may offer some advantages if I get to bypass K4PC in that it eliminates one of the variables in the d/l process. Short of changing the DRM protocol, Amazon can control the process via K4PC. Then again, they may be putting pressure on both ends. |

Argh. We are passing in cyberspace.
I don't understand what you mean by d/l from their webpage to my PC. When I one click buy, it seems I have a choice of where to send it... any of my registered devices. |

Oh I just figured it out! I never knew there was a way to do it, but if you go to amazon's website and manage kindle content, there is a choice under Action to download and transfer to PC. Click kindle library as the destination and download. It saves the file to your computer, then you can transfer to calibre to free it. Then you can mail it to your kindle or connect through USB, however you wish. I didn't know about this either so that is really cool. I think it will use the kindle PID rather than anything with k4pc so it is a way to bypass that totally.

![]() Just remember, the Device specific PID for your Kindle no longer works for Amazon purchases (unless you have software less than 2.5 on your device), it's the 16 character serial number you want. Last edited by DiapDealer; 07-19-2011 at 06:10 PM. |

When I go to manage my Kindle account and choose a book to d/l, I see this (as an example): ![]() When I highlight Actions, I see this: ![]() And when I choose Deliver to my..., I only see my registered devices (2 Kindles, K4PC, K4PC 2, and my iPad): ![]() If I choose Download and transfer via USB, it asks me which K3 to transfer it to. Is this the choice you are referring to as Transfer via computer? What am I missing? |

You simply download the file and copy it to Calibre rather than to the Kindle. I have two vaguely relevant points to make in this thread: 1. Even if the concerns in the OP pan out and the current maintainers can no longer maintain the current tools, there are other developers with other skill sets who will find other ways around it. We will have short hiatus at most. Even if the current fundamental methodologies are rendered impractical for the long haul, as others have implied, machine vision and related technologies are advancing so fast, other totally different methods around this nonsense will soon be practical. I would not be surprised if in the near future we will be able to flip a book in front of a cell phone camera and have a well-formatted ePub pop out. 2. Reminder that the Library of Congress DCMA rule-making cycle begins in October, and they will give opportunity for the public to comment on what exemptions the Librarian should create. Make sure you let it be known that we want protection for this sort of space- and format- shifting. ApK |

The exchange rate is the issue. And given how the US is going down the toilet, I feel the exchange rate will get worse.

Regarding ApK'e encouraging words, thanks! Is there a link to where one would go to make those comments to the Librarian? |
