Did you guys get Rollins' Black Order during the freebies a month or so ago? It is a thriller without a plot. Better than a sleeping pill. It has been putting me to sleep for a week now, and I have not quite made it to halfway.

It has been very disappointing. I was a fan, buying the books with Painter Crowe, Grayson Pierce, et al. But this one seems odd, as if it were "written in the style of James Rollins" in a way.

And Nazis doing secret human experiments in the 21st century? That is soooooo last millenium.

I've started reading "In Her Name: Empire" by Michael Hicks. I got it free and started out skeptical. Am moderately suprised that I still like it two chapters in.

I just finished WWW: Wonder, the third book of the WWW trilogy by Robert J. Sawyer and I've got to say that I haven't been so excited or stimulated by a work of science fiction since the first time I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey in Cinerama in 1968. The first book (WWW: Wake) was wonderful and full of heart, the second (WWW: Watch) was edge of the seat exciting, but the third one just completely blew me away. This series covers all the bases and gives you plenty of food for thought along the way. I can't recommend it highly enough.

finished recently but not posted :

The Sisters Brothers - Patrick Dewitt
Hounded, Hexed, Hammered - 3 books (Iron Druid Chronicles) Kevin Hearne
The Heretic - Book 1 Templar Chronicles Trilogy - Joseph Nassise

none of the them were 4/5 star books all 3 star fun reads. there's nothing bad to say about any of them i did love the iron druid books more than the others as they were fun reads and included current pop culture and current locations and mixed up the mythologies and gods from various religions.

Wow, with such a strong recommendation, can't pass it up. Added to my Amazon wish list.

I believe that trilogy reviewed quite well so it doesn't surprise me that it's not terrible.

There's 20% off with code DDCOM.

This is the fifth in her "Young Wizards" series. I think I might have read it before, and I've definitely read the first four before. But the first four are going to be revised to fit the timeline of the later books better (and to make the technology match better too), so I'm not going to re-read them until that's done.

Thank you Paul, I truly appreciate your review postings....particularly the short fiction!

Going back a way, finished Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. Not sci-fi as so much of this extended thread, but a good National Book Award winner from a few years ago.

Currently listening to Orpheus Rising:Love, Rockets & A Bloody Great Fish by Colin Bateman. Not as overtly funny as some of his previous stuff, and a tad more "romantic", but still better than average fayre.

Quote:
Michael Ryan was the author of a runaway bestseller, Space Coast", but its publication coincided with his wife's murder in a bank raid. Now he's back to face the ghosts of his past.Michael met Claire when she was dragging Paul de Luca, detective novel writer and owner of a porn shop, out of the sea after he'd lost his feet in a shark attack. Claire was living with local hard man Tommy, a Gulf War vet, at the time and Tommy was not impressed with Michael's interest in his girl. When Tommy leaves town to be a roadie for a band playing a six week stint on a cruise ship, Michael falls in love with Claire, they marryand he writes his novel. But then Claire is killed in the bank raid. Ten years later Michael returns to the scene of the crime to exorcise the ghosts of the past and try to write his second novel. But he discovers the grim truth behind his wife's murder andencounters the strangest of small-town behaviour...
