Bread and (beef) dripping is wonderful - this from a vegetarian of 25 years, not had that since I were a lad.

If anyone is prepared to eat bread spread with butter (i.e. fat) they really have no reason to balk at bread and dripping. If the dripping has some of the meat juice in it and a bit of added salt, it is quite tasty. And mayonnaise is basically a high-fat emulsion, so much the same sort of thing.

ah but the 'gravy' at the bottom of the beef is no where near as good as that at the bottom of the pork (this from someone who eschews meat these days). and there aint no vegan substitute ....

I draw the line at chipped beef on toast, though I've known several people who used leftover bacon fat as a spread. Those chip butties sound appalling, though. Deep-fried starch slathered in fat and wedged between planks of bleached carbs? |

How about deep-fried Mars bars then? I must say I've never wanted nor had one, and the same for chip butties.

The farthest I've gone in American vat-oil worship is the occasional deep-fried turkey.

Just to add another dimension to the deep fried conversation - at the Calgary Stampede this year they had Deep Fried Snicker's bars and Deep Fried Pop tarts. Every year they try to do something different. When I visited Stonehaven in Scotland one year, they had a sign outside a shop window that said that they were the "Home of the deep fried Mar's bar".

Issy -- I have no problem with chips (crisps) in the sandwich, but not as the filling itself. Only strawberry Pop-Tarts come unfrosted here - yecch. I like brown sugar cinnamon, but not enough to buy a box. |

I noticed at the grocery store last week that Ben & Jerry's has a new ice cream flavor called Late Night Snack with vanilla ice cream, caramel swirl and chocolate-covered potato chips. They had it on special at the end of the row. Quote:

When I was a kid, one of my favorite treats at a picnic was when my grandma would cut off a piece of slab bacon, stick it on the end of a stick and hold it over a wood or charcoal fire until the fat started to melt. She would then blot the charred bacon fat on slices of rye bread (real chewy rye with caraway seeds from a Jewish bakery - not that soft store-bought crap ). Sprinkle a little salt on the bread and yum! Artery-clogging heaven. |

Which is why I haven't had one for a while, but they are fantastic.
