It's very rare that you need to manually change things to Compatibility mode on a Windows 7 or Vista system. Most of the time, and all of the time when it's a matter of 32 vs 64 bit, the O/S does it for you.
Ah. Dang. I was hoping to regain my Mr Know-It-All crown! Without it, I fear my posts may become Toothless...

Indeed, what you are saying is that 32 or 64 bit is generally invisible to the end user. All too true (and good!).

Sony's stupid device driver is the exception (would be on Windows too), the stupid part being that Sony Reader Library needs it at all; or, I should say, uses it, since the application certainly can be programmed to bypass the driver entirely.

You will have to copy the books from the MacBook to the Reader either manually or using something like Calibre.

You can still use the Sony software to buy books, manage your library, and view books on the Mac.

Works fine on Windows. I've installed Reader Library on XP Pro, XP Home, Vista Home 32-bit, Win 7 Home Premium 32 and 64-bit & Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit. All with no problems at all.

Yep. Sony is a Windows house. They sell Vaio computers with Windows, and I'm convinced that's why they've always supported Windows exclusively in the past (capitalism, go figure!). I was honestly surprised there was even a Reader Library Application released for the Mac at all.

While the driver issue is a bummer (and silly) on the Mac, it's still better than the alternative!

I get the calibre bit but what do you mean by copying the books manually? Sorry to be so clueless. Does this apply to all books or just those with DRM?

Manually is to just drag and drop (or copy/paste) them from your PC/Mac to your Sony when the Sony is attached to your PC/Mac via USB. Your Sony will appear as an external drive when it is attached. DRM is irrelevant.

the other solution is to use the windows version of the reader software in VMWare or Parallel which works very well for me.

If you use library management software, like calibre or Adobe Digital Editions or Sony Reader Library, then you can click a button in the software and it will automatically transfer the contents of your library to the correct folders on your ereader. Then you don't have to drag and drop.

Thanks everyone for your help. I don't worry about keeping my books sorted into folders, I usually only read a book once, so I just delete them when I've finished. So it looks as though it should all work ok (fingers crossed). Am I right in assuming that if I can't put the book onto the reader using the Sony software I can do it with ADE, which is what I do now with my Eco eclipse.

I get the Sony on Thursday and if I have any trouble I'll get back to you wise ones.

Except, of course, the company that did the upgrade did it in 2005, and the company with the incompatible software is still shipping it 6 years after the upgrade occurred and, by the way, the incompatible stuff is DRM crap that never needed to be installed in the first place, which is why the free open source software works with both kinds of machines.
